Has the crank been knife-edged at all?

No.

i assume that it was polished then? also at what point would it require knife edging?

NEVER!

I guess I have made my point ? :)

Was there any damage to the brores that resulted in the compression issue or was it something else?
Walt car had overheated in its previous life and the bores where out by 200 hundreths at the top of the stroke.
Lebo decided to do a proper fix rather than muck about

Oh well all will be forgotten the moment it is run in again and you chase the redline much to the annoyance of anyone standing near you.

Nothing is making me appreciate the S54 more than having to live with the 320i/DS4. Sure the little Citroen is mighty quick in boost for overtaking but 6000rpms is soooooo dieselish.

True, can't wait to get the car back and run it in. One thing I've learnt from this experience is that this is the LAST car i'm rebuilding except if I get a e28 M5 in future.

I fully agree. As much as i would love a Z3M/Z4M (and trust me the just for a blue clownshoe is high) i'd rather blow a 100k on rebuilding a 911's engine next time round.

Still we are men, so suck it up pay up and enjoy.

A little more progress......

Cometic gasket

All ancillaries were cleaned by Lebo including the gearbox. I am advised that he spent roughly 80/100 hours cleaning and it shows.

One of the more challenging parts of the assembly is the installation and timing of the cams.

Nice exhausts hey

Heat shield detail.

Almost ready for it to be covered.....just need to finalise clearances.

The missing bolt on the pulley is to remind me that we still need to do final degree torque on the crank which will require the engine to be in the car

:praise: Well done Lebo and Peter!
That's an immense amount of cleaning done. I'm sure you have the hands to show for it.

I'm still amazed by Peter's workmanship, the attention to detail and the pride he takes in his work.

Awesome work! :praise:
So clean it looks amazing.

Those shims seem to be a well designed item.
Dawie they are as they take longer to go out of tolerance....the down side is that when they do it is R300 per shim from agents.
