as much as you love your e30 i dont think it will stay around long unless you up the power some how... the gap is just too big... the e30 is light but no where near light enough to make up for the power :(

the only logical thing to do is make the e30 a project car and drop a bigger engine in :)

Sweet ride dude. Enjoy, and don't be afraid of turning that traction control OFF. VERY OFF!! (in the dry) The car just feels more alive. ( find my cars TC to be quite intrusive at times, not sure about the E34) Oh and you can even pull off in 4th, I found out...

I've once pulled away in third with the 318i. Was actually surprised at how strong the little 1.8L is at low rpm.

Question for the guru's:
The 540i idles at about 500rpm. Is that where it's suppose to be?? Seems very low to me and even though I love V8's, I'm not very clued up on them.

Mine also idles around the 500rpm mark, and I have heard that this is fairly normal.

Congrats on the new ride Nic. I am seriously green with envy. SERIOUSLY green.:)

Was also curious about this, mine also idles on 500rpm, so maybe thats where they supposed to idle. Comments from the guys that know???

After I disconnected the battery for maintenance, mine refused to idle when I stopped. This is annoying, especially in traffic, especially since mine is automatic. After 15 odd km, it came right by itself. Still and even today, the car idles anything between 450 and 600rpm.

Rick says he can manipulate it for me, but that will make for jerky engaging of reverse, drive etc, especially on the auto.

On the manual, it will probably just up your fuel consumption.

Should they be idling higher? Mine seems to be fine on 500rpm, smooth idle not rough or anything.
Most cars I've owned usually idled between 750-800rpm, but none of them were V8's....:dunno:

Nah, keep it there.

I just wanted to up mine, cause it was stalling and I did not know why. Turned out the ECU was just busy adjusting itself.

Mine is still idling on 500, and its fine now.

My 318i also idles at around 750-800. The 540i's idling is also dead smooth and I pull out of parking on the idle alone. I think that's where it's suppose to be.

Was just home for lunch... cut it short so I can take the scenic route back to work :):)

Just did a quick Google search, seems to be the norm with most guys. Perhaps thats how its supposed to be.

So I stepped out my 1991 318i straight into a 1996 540i 6 Speed and I was like... (#$$%!@*$%(#$%@()!)$%...AWESOME!! :excited:

This is no. 9 of 72.

I don't have proper picks yet. Will take some when I get some time.

I was told not to use the original bolts for the rear wheels as they go brittle from the constant heat and cooling from braking. That's why the rear wheel "Faces" are not fitted yet. They are in the boot and are perfectly fine. Just need bolts.

Something else I've found is that the CD Shuttle doesn't seem to work. Don't know if it's just disconnected or what. Was to dark to see last night :dunno:

The only mods seem to be the Sub in the boot and it's been decatted (Spelling?). It's soft, but gives a decent purr when you accelerate without needing to floor it. Pretty much perfect I think.
It's currently on 195*** km.

So I'm all :):):):)

EDIT: I'm keeping the 318i as well.

Congrats, that is one awesome car:thumbsup: The e34 is one of my favourites, have had a number of them over the years, and my mom and girlfriend both drive '95 525i's. The 540 is a rocketship!

The CD shuttles are a common e34 bugbear. I think its the "shocks" in the unit that go with time, and that's why the music skips over every bump. There's a company called Henry's in Plattekloof that does a lot of work for the agents. I have taken mine there in the past, and will be getting my girlfriends sorted out in the near future. They do a good job, and not too pricey. Hope that helps.

Like Sith said, speak to Henry. The company name is Combined Electronics. They fixed my Pajero's headunit on the spot.

I'm not in a rush to get it fixed though... for now I have the best V8 sound track in the world :drool:

DUDE...AWESOME! :drool::drool::drool:

Lucky bastard! :) ...People seem to be finding lots of 6 speed gearboxes these days, strange that there is always a car attached...:dunno:

By zee vay, these V8's are supposed to idle between 500 and 560rpm

Yup, mine idles dead on 500rpm. Feels like the cars not even turned on. With the aircon on however, it idles slightly higher, at maybe 700rpm.
