E46 ///M rod bearing failure

I'll do. I'm just on a trip at the moment, will load it up as soon as I get home. To give you an idea we're in for 50k + on parts alone...

That is not that bad considering.

More like R80k and that excludes engineering/balancing and odds and sods.
Glen will put up the list when able.

To think it could happen to anyone and could have also been be prevented in hindsight. ...respect for forking out that amount instead of going the easy way with engine swaps etc.:clapper:

Problem with an engine swap is that it affects future resale value. Plus, when you get a replacement engine it would also require a fair amount of preventative maintenance in order to prevent future failures. So in the long run, a rebuild actually works out cheaper if the block can be saved

Why are you guys complaining about the engine of the M3E46?

Just do not buy it if you do not want to spent the additional money to sleep relaxed....easy!

P.S.: I am currently spending money on my CSL to avoid a failure of the engine...and I am happy to pay it even if the bearings are still fine!

I would ALWAYS rebuild my own engine before I would use another one.....which also needs to be openend becaus enobody can guarantee what happened to it in the past!

This is scary, moreso for prospective buyers without technical savvy.

Are their aftermarket plans available for M cars? even if they wouldn't cover the entire repair cost it could at least mitigate the damage.

Dude an aftermarket plan on a M car is the proverbial screwing for virginity.

Most of the specialists who can be trusted with these cars is not RMI affliated in any case.

Also, those plans will not buy you a gasket set when things go pear shaped on these motors. Also, they will most probably not allow for preventative bearing maintenance to be carried out. Those plans are super for a Toyota Yaris with 80,000km on the clock...

Man, but it is worth the slog to keep one of these things going.

Good luck!

As promised, from uncle Pyotir's page on the engine build, myepic adventure of wrestling the S54 from her perch in the nose of the ///M3 to putting everything back together again...

Prepping to get it out.

It took me a total of about 4 working days of garage time to put the motor back in and stitch the car back together. It took me 3 weeks of working every day to get it out. I must say there was a total lack of motivation to pull it, as I knew it was going to be a financial b$%tch slap... ;)

The dreaded baboon droppings in the sump...

This was a very emotional moment. You know that feeling you got in primary school when you got called into the principal's office... Similar...
