E46 ///M rod bearing failure

Let me know how it works for you - and if you are very particular, once the part is clean you can soak it in acid (a weak solution which must be rinsed off well) and thereafter some aluminium cleaner ... it should look like new

The best I have found to clean the external parts of oily grime and grease is paraffin. I used to take the chainlube off the boneys with it. works like a charm, on chains and especially with the two-smokes, with that burnt on oil all over the expansion chambers etc. Just didn't have any handy when I cleaned the bits of S54... Suppose it would also work a charm there. My hands are still sore from the Zeb oven cleaner... That stuff is pure bloody evil.

That is the reason that gloves are mandatory :)

@Andrew what brand and where does one source aluminium cleaner from?

I decanted about 2 liters from a friend who has a silverton radiators franchise ... i am sure that any chem shop could provide though

Just an update on the actual build...

So far the crank could fortunately be saved

I ordered some new bearings (big ends & mains), ARP rod bolts and a cometic gasket from VAC, the most expensive order of the lot...

We got pistons from Top End Performance in the states as well (JE's, at 0.5mm o/s)

And a few bits from Turner, and some stuff from Beemer themselves (New valve springs, timing chain, head bolts etc)

Think I'm going to mount that bent rod on a piece of wood and call it the because ///M3 excuse board. Why are the wife and dogs so skinny, refer to ///M board. Why is there no furniture in the house, refer ///M board you guys get the idea :roflol:

From my side I've just picked up a whole box of parts from Peter that has to go through the oven cleaner episode again, this time I'm using a hazmat suit...

Then I want to get the car out the garage to clean out the engine bay properly, so she can look like new as well ;)

Pics to follow...

For sure brother!

Small update again, got the last box of parts from Uncle Sam.

(New CPV, oil pump chain, new RTABs, a set of coils, a set of tps's and some other bits)

Sat down yesterday with a pocket calculator and a spreadsheet. Sheeet.

The total kind of makes one's eyes water...

But, having said that, its coming back better than new, and as strong as mother russia.

Just waiting for VAC now with the new set of rod bearings then we can start putting the puzzle back together...

Haha I wish Peter, still in the wrong side of the cockpit for that LOL ;)

Vac says 2-3 weeks for the bearings ffs... Apparently they are out of stock. I think the whole batch they got from Calico was stuffed, hopefully they'll fix the packaging now.

^^^ can you measure the bearing thickness against stock? Over at m3post they are saying that the VAC coated bearings, with coating added, is the same thickness as the stock bearings. So no need to grind the crank down to use these.

Awaiting results in anticipation!

Will do when they come. Gonna be another 3 weeks at the earliest ffs...

Bear in mind that these are 0.025 undersized.
