BMW cylinder head gaskets are very sensitive to overheating. I had a gasket blow on an E36 when the temp gauge just went over the middle line and never into the red zone, then had the car towed. A honda I had did the same thing when a thermostat malfunctioned, but never blew a gasket. The E36 gasket cracked, and was pressurising the rest of the cooling system casuing damage to other components. An E46 318 i once had drove home one day and went slightly over the middle temp line and refused to start the next day- head gasket blown, head warped.

ok guess we have had opposite experiences..my 330i had a crack in expansion tank and overheated...and then belt snapped and overheated...and i pulled over and the car was perfect.

I also had the opposite experience, my old E36 325i went well into the red (with the red light coming on) and the engine was fine... I sometimes think its better to keep driving/coasting in neutral to get airflow over the engine to cool it as much as possible.... because the temp continues to rise even after you stop...

Had the same experience with an e46 and an e90. Both six pots. Both went deep into the reds. Comp test were all good after...

I agree evnmopwr that you should get a second, even a third opinion. I would go to technicians who specialise in BMW engines cos they'd have the proper diagnostic equipment as well as practical experience gained over many years so they will have an idea where to look, and how to troubleshoot problems. Relying on a general mechanic with no specialist knowledge can cost you a lot of money and not solve your problem. A google search will tell you which workshops specialise in BMW other than the main dealer who will charge you the earth.

Im in Cape Town yes.
I can refer you to my wifes cousin who works for an RMI approved workshop but works from home also. ( So prices are cheaper with the Same BMW Quality you would expect )

He can check your car out for you and tell you whats what.

Whtsapp him on 083 973 2901. his name is Shabeer. Just tell him Khalid referred you

According to both mechanics its a waste of time and other costs involved are going to work out more exoensive

oh sorry man, that's going to hurt your pocket :blueCry:
There's places selling replacement engines- rebuilt or remanufactured or second hand. A google search will bring them to your desk in seconds
Spend some time researching these options against just getting another 330 and sorting it out. After you've done a proper cost analysis you will know which option is best

Also makes me sad reading news like this @Jason330i

I must admit, I haven't seen many M54B30 engines advertised.

Give these guys a call (or whatsapp): https://www.facebook.com/BMWusedparts1

I think they had a M54B30 earlier this year. Currently see they have the 6 speed gearbox for the 330i, wanting it really bad but dont have the cashflow (more like budget) for it right now (need to do suspension ect 1st and my 5 speed gearbox 100%).

Only issue with doing another engine is police clearance for the engine number change afterwards.

Yeah no doubt. It’s a bit of a nightmare but can be done.
If your block is good then try to keep the sub assembly and get another cylinder head to replace the damaged one

80000km on an engine that's close to 20 years old?
Just be sure to check it out proper before you buy...
Sounds bit too good...

Problem is I dont know how to check these things haha..

Has anyone heard of LDR engines and gearboxes?

They have an engine for R22k and charge R5500 to install and it comes with a 6month warranty.

I did a google search and there was a couple of bad review so I am not sire now.

I spoke to the owner of the shop and he said they have all the forms ready. He sent a picture of the checklist to have it done.

I know this is going to peobably be a stupid question but is there anyway for me to see if the engine that gets put in my car is a 3.0L...

I might sound paranoid but what if they put a 325 or 328 motor in? Is there ways to see?

If they have the vin number of the car they took the engine from,
You could run a vin Decoder to check

There are numbers on the side of the engine block that tell you the displacement. 25 6S being 2.5i and 30 6S 3.0i ect.
