Lol. Ya, Peter takes it to another level. Which is good.

It's such a pity that we don't have those two timing chain cover gaskets. Otherwise we would have had the motor in today.

Peter's style has been cramped.

Hopefully the gaskets will be here on Tuesday and we can finish up and close up the engine this week coming.

Video of block assembly to come later today, pending upload speed.

Another small update...

Just wanted to post some info for you guys to see the Piston Rings and how they are set up to work with Jezebel.

Goch & Cooper, who originally did an amazing build on this engine, never gapped the rings. They were too tight and in the end seized.

Peter saw this right away upon opening the engine and knew something fishy was up. After inspecting the old rings and the new ones, he realized they need to be gapped for the car.

I contacted Tony at Vac Motorsports and he confirmed that the rings need to be gaped and emailed me these instructions which I will post below.

Peter has already gapped the rings, as you will see in the video. Without even being told the tolerances from Vac, he had calculated pretty much correctly how much needed to be filed off.

Here are the specifications from CP/Carrillo for the N50 piston rings.

The CP/Carillo N50 piston rings.

as they say the devil is in the details...

you can have the best parts but if not installed correctly they will not deliver what they should :(

It is even more important to get things right on a build like this because tolerances even smaller... its not like an S54 is a pig iron engine to start with...

Whilst waiting for gaskets

Cylinder head gratuitous pics

Which is the cam with the polished journals?

Left front wheel well and suspension after having been cleaned off from oil splutter.

I guess per wheel well the cost must be in the region of R50 000 in performance parts.
Just a guess mind you.

Got to see this motor today as well as the effort and detail that Peter is putting into the build.... It is the stuff that fanatics dream of.:praise::praise::praise:

Normally it is a sore sight to see cars that are stripped and being repaired, but Chris seeing your car in its current state only shows the effort and dedication to your car..
:bravo::bravo::bravo:

Nothing else can instill confidence better than what I saw today.

Thank you Sash. Ya, it really is amazing seeing it being put together and the detail at which Peter goes through.

I am so confident in his skills, I assure, Peter can vouch that I do my research and make sure that I am satisfied with what is being done to the car. Peter has cancelled any suspicions I may have had going into this rebuild.

Thank you for the compliments.

PS. That cylinder head looks great!!! Cannot wait to try out these new Vac valves with the 3 angle cut. That's the one thing I am most excited about.

Watching this build is like waiting for Santa
I Can't wait for it to be completed.

Peter you will have to take a pic of Chris when it fires up for the first time. I have a feeling his cheek bones will need physio afterwards :)

Small update:
I am told that the gaskets have arrived (R170 for the gaskets and R1100 for shipping) and Crash is on his way to collect this morning.

Intention is to continue this evening with closing up the short block and head etc in the morning (Friday) with engine completion by Friday night and attempt to re fit the engine on Saturday.

All things being equal we should be able to fire up on Sunday.

For those wondering what has happened to the sub assembly video clip being posted I invite you to join me for a pre release screening.

Crash you there?

Wow, R1100 for shipping a few gaskets. Must be customs??

I feel I should point something out though... I think this car is almost more a part of the forum's history than any of the owner's. :)
The previous rebuild thread still has the most views of any thread on the forum:

Had a chance to meet Peter yesterday and have a quick peek at this build up close. Have no doubt the result here will be awesome.

The video is done... I'm just having a problem getting Peter's choice in music to work with it...

:fencelook:

Ha ha... Just kidding. I will trim the video down, its sitting on 14 minutes already and that is just for the bottom end install of crank, rods, pistons and some neat filing down... oh... and a minute and 30 seconds of me showing you guys all the new bolts I had to buy from BMW...

I will upload the video today... nothing magical in terms of the edit, but if you love to see how an engine is assembled, this video is for you...

PS. Going to fetch gaskets in the next hour or so... UPS are still clearing the thing out.
