Can't believe the places they used silicon... I mean what kind of moegoe do you have to be to NOT use a sump gasket at all??

Can see that power plant is in good hands now :thumb:

Nic the sealant was used by G&C as well as GTech.

GTech used a paper gasket which was full of leaks as well as a series of fasteners from Toyota as well as VW to secure the sump.

Engine mountings were secured with general purpose 8mm bolts from the nearest hardware and some had been reduced in length by sawing through them.

The attention to detail exercised by Gtech was minimal at best and reckless at worst.

G&C did not gap the compression rings on all the cylinders and the gap was measured at 0.15 with a minimum requirement of 0.28.
Needless to say that the compression rings failed which led to the scrapper ring becoming the compression ring.

I have done little if anything out of the ordinary on this build other than pay attention to tolerances, clearances and ensuring that all fasteners used are the correct spec for the application.

I also do not need to rush the build so have all the time to do things at my pace without a boss chasing for productivity and turnover.

On a side note my suspicion that BMW is run by a bunch of asinine cretins has been reinforced of late.
I guess beyond oil filters and spark plugs they have little else in stock.

If you are building an M be prepared to hear "No stock ex Germany only"

I've said this in another post, but it seems most have this "That will do" mentality and it almost always involves silicon.

I'm so excited to see this car up and running again, one might think it's mine :mmm:

I would like to point out the following few facts..

Firstly, crash you are aware of the fact that Peter is dripping his gooey sticky green stuff all over jez.... was it good for you ?

Secondly, I would like to point out that you have a dog in your crack.... Just saying...

Thirdly, I fscking LOVE the wolfsheim, have not heard their new stuff.

Lastly, and most importantly.... incredible road you have travelled for this car, you are, as they say, a BMW Fanatic :)

:praise: :praise: :praise:

So Crash delivered the gaskets which are manufactured from unobtainium given their price.

Had a good look at them and have decided that I will mount them as they are too expensive to hide in an engine therefore I am waiting for MIDAS to open in the morning so that I can buy 2Kg of silicone sealant to put the timing cover on.

Stay tuned for bottom end pics as soon as I finish a job from hell for a buddy.

(Buddy you know who you are) :fencelook:

:roflol: The new swear words you learnt have to be worth it.....

I know you deserve your holiday after working on my car as well as Jezebel though....

Unfortunately, this is a very valid point, and you see it all over in not just the motor industry. Work gets under-quoted in order to secure the business and then done in a hurry in order to get the next car (or whatever) into the shop.

Saving / making money have made the actual job at hand secondary, and it is sad. Sometimes having someone take a day or three extra is exactly what you need.

Also I think there is a majority out there that do what they do because it is a source of income and they have to, and not because they are passionate about what they do and take pride in the result.

Here is the latest video from last weeks bottom end install.

The video was shot with a very shallow depth of field. Thus, it is recommended to watch the video in the highest quality you can to get the sharpest image. Lots of focus pulling required. I'm a little rust....

[video=youtube]

Mods, can we update Title of the thread to - New video on page 11.

Thanks.

bumping Vid to this page for those who missed it...

bearings nicely oiled for 1st startup :)

Peter, you have got that analysis about BMW spot on and that was one of the reasons I sold the 1M. They also think their customers are dumb idiots that know nothing about the mechanical workings of a self-propelled motor vehicle. I hate their "new" Motor Plan. Yes, it is now coupled to endless paper work due to the CPA and no actual work gets done on the motor vehicle. :yuck:

Excellent job thus far.
