Amazingly flat torque curve on this engine. Must really haul in the top gears for effortless overtaking and eye watering sprints to highly illegal road speeds.

Top end pull will get you into trouble with the cops very quickly, can't imagine how so many guys still mod these cars

Car is in for its first service 10 000km already! Time flies....

Have a few things lined up which include ACS springs thanks to @Yash2468, side skirts from MHC and maybe an exhaust system yet to decide on which system!

Gave her a wash yesterday as I do not allow anyone to wash my cars, but damn keeping a black car in tip top condition is a mission.

G87 Mini Review – A Year In​


Reflecting on the past year with the G87, it’s been nothing short of exciting. The car has been flawless mechanically not a single trip back to BMW, which is a refreshing change compared to my previous M340i that had a few niggles. Ride quality for a car of this performance class is surprisingly good. In Comfort (Efficient) mode, it handles our less than perfect South African roads with ease. Switch it up to Sport, especially with the suspension firmed up, and it becomes a corner hugging weapon. Its brought back the drama I was missing from the F82 M4 that the M340i was not fulfilling


There’s no shortage of settings to fiddle with maybe too many, if I’m honest but at least there’s something for everyone. Personally, I’ve set M1 to full attack mode with traction on level 8, and M2 with MDM engaged. For relaxed cruising, I throw the gearbox in level 2 and keep it in Sport perfect for longer trips (unless I feel like unleashing M1 or M2 mode, of course).


Now, the weight debate. Let me say this again: on the road, I don’t feel the extra kilos compared to my F82 M4. If anything, the G87 feels sharper dare I say, "more nimble," as many reviewers love to put it. The performance never gets old. It still feels just as quick as the day I collected it. In MDM mode, it delivers an edge with more wheel spin, more fun, but without painting thick black lines everywhere.


Yes, the steering feel is a bit numb but is it a dealbreaker? Not at all. On South African roads riddled with potholes and uneven surfaces, I don’t want to feel every little bump anyway. In this case, I’ll take a bit of filtered feedback for the sake of sanity.

Inside, the cabin is solid and well built. I came across a comment recently criticizing the quality on this platform, I took offense. Even the base 320i interior puts many competitors to shame in terms of cabin quality. From the clean dashboard design to the premium door trims and minimal use of cheap plastics, it feels every bit like a premium product. The rear has just enough space for my 10 and 11 year old kids, while my 5 year old, the king of the castle always calls shotgun. For longer family trips, the iX takes over.

Boot space? Enough for three school bags, which works perfectly when I’m on pickup duty. Yes, this is also my daily, well kind of. Working from home means it’s not out on the roads daily, but it does its fair share.


Public opinion? Since the initial purchase, the compliments rolled in:
  • “Looks so much better in person than online!”
  • “Damn, that’s menacing.”
  • “It’s a machine.”
  • “Your car looks wicked!”
  • “What do you do for a living to afford this?” (Ask me again when I’m in a Porsche. 😂)
Now I not bias here I let my brother in law drive my car once while I trailed him in his car, yes even I could not keep focused I kept taking peeks at the M2 especially in the review mirror

Petrol attendants love it. They often want to talk shop, ask about my past cars, and even debate if I’d ever switch to an M3 or M4.

Performance wise, the M2 is brutally fast BMW clearly underrates their figures. I’ve had some fun against RS3s, A45s, M3s, and M4s. The xDrive G80/82 will kill me from a dig, but from a roll, the G87 holds its own. RS7s and M5 Comps? Yeah… those humbled me real quick. As for tuning I’ve considered it, but R192K for an ACS chip? No thanks (for now).


The exhaust note gets praise from the outside, but those four silencers in the mid-section do mute it a bit to a point where the inside is quite. I’m tempted to go with a full system equal length midpipe and a new back box to unleash a bit more drama.

Creature comforts? I miss the 360-degree camera from the M340i, but beyond that, it ticks the boxes: heated seats, a clean digital dash that initially felt overwhelming but eventually grew on me.

What’s next? Honestly, no idea. I’m not rushing into a new vehicle upgrade. The G87, for now, delivers everything I want engaging, premium, brutally quick, and still a bit of a bargain in today’s market when you compare it to what rivals are charging.

Haha appreciate it, gents! Let’s just say my day job keeps me busy in the world of enterprise IT, large scale networks, cloud, and all the fun that comes with keeping things connected, maybe a data center melt down here and there... No password reset or reboot my pc kind of stuff :cool:

If your numberplate matches your username, I spotted you outside the Mugg & Bean move-thru the other day. Car looks great and black (or the darker shades) are definitely the colour to get it in. Ultimately as long as you love it that is all that matters. It doesn't really matter whether everyone likes the looks or not, which will always be on the border for me - but like I posted elsewhere, you can't argue with the capability of the car.

On the weight story, there are no real 'lightweight' cars in the traditional sense - but these are all still in a 'range' of power to weight that will still feel good to drive and fairly nimble (M2/3/4/5). I am always curious to read how people think they will understand what a 50kg or 100kg difference will feel like when they read a press release. Nobody knows whether 50kg of that stat is from arb component changes which would mean very little or actual unsprung mass which would be game-changing. Having 'actual' lightweight and overweight cars (arguably) and having owned cars people 'thought' were lightweight and nimble in the past, you'll quickly realise most of the comments rubbishing or praising weight are from folks who have never actually done weight-reducing exercises on their own cars or actually owned lightweight cars in the past. Just a different form of spec sheet racing (not that you can't infer things from a spec sheet - it is just not the be-all and end-all of sources).

In the case of supercars sometimes they even get to these 'savings' by just omitting options that would end up being added right back when speccing the car anyway! - Anyway they are technically lighter than one another but that lightness is also in areas and 'volumes' that really aren't going to make it horrendously worse or miraculously better. You need a gigantic drop in sprung mass to notice, which is my beef with the ridiculous CS/CSLs (or what BMW marketing passes off as this these days) and how hyped everyone gets for changes that will largely go unnoticed except by influencers paid to say so. I think you are just fine buying a regular M2/3/4/5 and rather modding to taste than buying the pre-packed options if that makes sense.

I wouldn't bother tuning it - just enjoy it - I have found almost nobody is up for 'friendly' or otherwise races as was common 10-15 years ago and besides which there are cops at every turn these days. I don't think the ACS chip is in any way worth it - you still aren't going to be in V8TTs with it and you will need 'actual' mods and software to get there IMHO. I am pretty sure the M2, like most cars, is also perpetually calling home with a host of telemetry. Unless you are fielding the car at events I wouldn't bother. It is PLENTY fast. When the time comes past plan you can add more if you really want to. I found with my F10 M5 that even when this time came, while it was very nice having a KW figure starting with a 5 and hp figure starting with a 7 on paper, it almost immediately went back to the 'basic safe' competition pack + downpipe map for the rest of its time with me. You just can't use it and it is materially slower in most situations just managing the traction (and at my advancing age racing is not on the cards let alone with a 2 ton car LOL)... its adding more power to a car that already was on the border of having too much stock.

Agree 👍 Same boat as you as I have aged I dont have that itch to mod my cars anymore. Just want more out of the exhaust note.

CS cars are over priced indeed generally a G87 with M X drive is more of an upgrade for me rather than the CS spec car...
