Active Engine Mountings

Hi, I have recently begun to experience some harshness from the engine on my '05 X5 3.0d ..... This tends to happen under hard acceleration in the 2000 to 3000 RPM range .... Whilst I was checking condition of drivetrain incl. driveshaft couplings etc. I noticed that the engine mounts are vacuum operated .... I plan to check out the system but would like to know if anybody else has had any experience with these things?

On my pre-facelift E53 2003 diesel i have a sort of rough spot also on exceleration and thought that the engine mounts could be to blame but after having a look at the engine mountings and the amount of work involved in removing them for a closer look and also after looking at them closely and jacking up the engine to look for tears, i decided to leave it at that and live with it. There were no leaks from the fluid filled mountings that i could see. I was of the opinion that maybe on acceleration and the accompanying torque, that the mounting bracket maybe touched the bodywork/mounting point on the body (hope you understand what i mean) and that that produced the sort of vibration/droning sound, but could not see any evidence of that happening, and so i just left it at that. If you find anything on your car please let us know!

"Droning" is a better description of the sound/vibration that I am experiencing - I have traced the vacuum lines to a switchable valve under the intake manifold ..... I need to rig up something to pull a vacuum on the lines going to the mountings to see if there are any leaks

Will post any progress

Maybe this is related. I have read that some of the X5's have air suspension all round. It is not perhaps the compressor under the spare wheel that is making the droning sound? My X5 3ld pre-facelift 2003 has recently started making a sound like a compressor and i am convinced that it is the rear air suspension that is starting to leak or whatever (my car has air suspension only at the back). It happens when i start the car and then not every time. It goes on for about 30 seconds then it stops.

This droning/vibration/noise I am experiencing sounds almost like the exhaust is touching under full power acceleration ..... It happens in the 2000 to 3000 rev range and then smooths out again ..... I could swear that it's a weak engine mounting bottoming out ... At least that's what it feels like

It sounds the same as mine. Also checked out the exhaust but could not see any problem with touching, etc. Am living with the "droning" as it is not that much of an irritation, as it only happens when you are accelerating from about 60kph to about 80. Mine has on 235k km, and yours?

I believe that we are experiencing the same problem .... Mine has 192 on the clock ..... I am planning to check out the vacuum lines and the control valve ASAP . New mountings are around R1300 each from Goldwagen
