As Lebo will tell you the motor sounds smooooooooooooth and silky.

The higher compression pistons are well suited to the engine, now it will be run in for 4000Km and we will do the swap to synthetic oil.

Estoril,however the engine bay is sprayed "The economy version of Estoril Blue" with a liberal amount of grey primer visible under the chassis legs.

Liqui Molly 20W50 mineral oil.

Will have an oil change at 2000Km and then again at 4000Kms to 5W30 or 5W40 Synthetic LM

There's a school of thought that advocates a hard running-in procedure. I've taken that option once, out of necessity, without any apparent detriment to the engine, however in fairness the longevity of the engine wasn't fully tested as a crank upgrade was effected before too many miles were packed on. The arguments in favour of an aggressive break-in procedure are quite compelling.

That would involve cruising at constant RPMs, not good for break-in. Driving around JHB's back streets with multiple RPMs and loads is way better for the motor.

That is a difficult one Earl as I have never worked on an E46 M3 with more than 160 000Km recorded on the odometer.

You about to see one with just south of 197000 showing on the ODO

Daily driven, on a 200km round trip commute for the last 90,000km. Never had a hassle of a day old until one spirited run up through the gears with a cam chain tensioner that decided to come adrift and dump a few liters of TWS with the ensuing carnage of the insides... Was planning a rebuild in 50k km in any case, this tensioner just decided enough, I want Chester to chew on my old crank NOW...

Apologies, the engine is being run in as we speak. I've already done about 250km. I have to re-learn how to drive the car again. It's faster and the power delivery almost instant and available very early on.

I drove the car again tonight with roughly267Km recorded on the new engine.

It is silky smooth with a great desire to rev.

Lebo sorted out my incorrect O2 sensor placement and the engine is much happier.

All in all a succesfull build.
Car will be back at roughly 1000/2000Km to check valve clearances and to check for tightness on the engine periphery bolts etc.

Total cost just short of R100k which included a new clutch slave cylinder and thrust bearing(the clutch and pressue plate have less than 20000 carefull under powered Ks on them so there was no need to change them).

was just about to say that...lol...just shows how technology advanced over the years...BMW built this engine to perfection, Peter and Lebo just took it to the next levelraise:raise:raise:raise:
