I used to run my e34 m5 on unleaded and then added this additive that I bought from Kosie Swanepoel. Can't for the life of me remember the name of the stuff.

I might be wrong, so please correct me if I am, but from my understanding older cars run fine on unleaded, the newer cars can't run on LRP or super since the cats get blocked, but you will be fine with unleaded.

i think it depends on the car leaded fuel also lubricates a bit so some old cars need this...
isnt the octane of LRP the same as unleaded?

try find out if your car need the extra lubrication from LRP if not i would just run unleaded...

This is what found on that website, I have the 535i 4 spd auto and they show it is not compatible with unleaded fuel.

Just maybe must look at swopping the engine with a newer one that can do unleaded or swop the car for a nice Land Rover Discovery.

I would call BMW directly. I highly doubt that the engine will be damaged by unleaded. I know there are very few cars that actually have such soft valve seats that they cannot run on unleaded, and they are really ancient. I also know of 1979 cars that came out with catalytic converters and could only run on unleaded...

Did they give a reason? The thing is, if the car was sold in america, it would need some major changes between here and there to be running on unleaded there and not be compatible over here...

Those people are all idiots at these recommended fuel usage information.
You can use unleaded, no problem. You wont get the desired exhaust gas emission readings, but no one cares in Africa.
There wasn’t a single BMW after 1985 that did not run on unleaded with CATS in the US and Europe.
Our cars have more or less the exact same basic engines as the foreign ones, but were tuned differently and some of the engine accessories and emission controls are different to run without cats and therefore the idiots recon you cant use unleaded.:bs:
Basically any engine with an aluminum head has hardened valve seats and can use unleaded.
If it will make you sleep better, you can pour a bottle of valve ease every now and again which is available at all filling stations, since that also has some degree of lubrication.

problem solved just get it chiped to run on unleaded so you know its good :)
while you at it you may aswell get your exhaust done so you get more out of it...

It is not that the petrol stations are phasing out, but more a problem where a lot of them made preparation for Unleaded, LRP, and Diesel and then Unleaded 95 was made available and as a result of demand, they are being forced to changed their LRP Tank to ULP95.

You must just look out as there are many stations that do cater for all 4 even 5 grades as you get Diesel 50ppm, Diesel 500ppm, LRP, ULP93 and ULP95.

I am sure there will be stations that are still selling LRP and will be doing so in the future as well.

I would not worry too much, unleaded should work fine. Whats the worst that can happen? You destroy the engine (I really doubt this will happen), then you get a 4l or 4.4l v8. Its really a win/win situation.

Sasol is currently still catering for all the grades still, but said in future they will also change LRP.

The mechanic found a engineering on friday that could assist him with this problem. They have apparently coverted a few of these engines like mine, they change the valve seats and something else. Shouldn't be more than R4000 right now, so there's a light at the end of this tunnel and I hope it aint a train. The guy said not to run unleaded without the conversion, because I can cause a lot of damage to the head currently. :excited::clap:

You should be able to run unleaded no problem. We can run unleaded all our cars, even my brothers 1990 M20 525i.

The only car that will have a slight problem is my 628. It can run unleaded but needs to run a tank of leaded every 4th tank.

I reckon you should be fine!
