Help me understand MHD data log

Went back to the Dyno at HM Auto today to compare if things are better. Pretty much the same as before and I am still down 35-40wkw compared to other stock vehicles.

Booked to go to Tune-Tech next Tuesday. I really hope this gets resolved soon.

I have now booked it

When you accelerate slowly meaning not stomping it but gradually accelerating can you hear an obvious gushing wind sound?

I would have said open your bonnet at HM dyno and let them run the dyno while you look into the engine bay and try and hear where the boost leak is coming from. For you to be so low on power I would imagine that the boost leak would be quite obvious.

Also have you looked into making your own boost leak tester? Goto a plumbing shop and pick up a pipe stop end thingy to block off one of your intakes and then take the other one and drill a hole into it and put a tire valve from a tire place, they gave me a valve for free. and then pressurize the system slowly and spray soapy water on obvious places and see if you can find the leak. you could also blow smoke into the system via the charge pipe or vacuum lines and see if you can find a leak.

My explanation may be lacking somewhat but there are a few youtube videos out there on checking for boost leaks.

I do hear a gushing sound when accelerating. I will just double check with a slow acceleration too but almost certain it is.

They don’t want someone in the dyno room for safety reasons so that wasn’t an option.

I have seen the recommendations of creating your own boost leak tester but the biggest reason I have written off doing it myself is because I don’t have means to pressurize it.

I did a boost leak test on my old Volvo S60 2.0t and all I used to pressurize it was an old tire pump that hooks up to a car battery.

I do have a BMW tyre pump in the boot. Will try use that. Hopefully I can get to the different places this week to get all the parts to make the boost leak tester.

Yeah, thanks. It is highly frustrating. The car is becoming more a pain than a joy. I have 328i 4pot performance on a twinscroll inline6 3l. No one wants that. Haha.

Update: I heard a humming/buzzing sound when I started the car this morning. Soon as the revs settled and I revved it slightly, the noise disappeared. When I looked under the hood, the noise seemed like it was coming from the booster solenoid. I am aware this could be a problem part. Is there a way to test this myself?

So it seems my intercooler is cracked. Not sure how much my extended warranty is going to cover but the workshop is busy finding out.

Sadly I see intercoolers that were for sale are sold. Not a cheap item new.

Seems they are covering most of it. An engine mount seemingly has collapsed too and the block is lying on the subframe (something like that) causing the serpentine belt to rub somewhere else so those will be replaced too.

oh dear, N54 problems.

The stock intercooler and charge pipe have been a laughing joke from bmw with all there turbo cars. Who ever decided to make the sides of an intercooler out of plastic at BMW should be shot with hollow points in the knee caps!

N55 in my case but needless to say BMW didn’t/doesn’t care too much. Cars just aren’t built to last like they use to be. Revenue streams before durability in most cases. If the cars weren’t so fun to drive then BMW would have a real problem on their hands.

Got my car back from Tune-Tech today with the new OEM intercooler and some other maintenance stuff done. Definitely a difference in performance. Might be over estimating the gain because I have been driving a Hyundai i20 all week but my heart was racing with from the thrill.

On a side note, very impressed by Tune-Tech Service. Always kept me update to date as I didn’t have to follow up once about what was happening. They also didn’t such a good job inspecting. Stuff I know was an issue no other place has spotted or commented on.

Guessing Oem intercooler was the only option on short notice. Glad there's an improvement

I don't suggest putting an mhd tune on your car with the stock intercooler.

I don't know what others experience is with this but logic tells me that plastic joins will break under the boost that MHD produces especially the stage 2 and stage 2 plus maps!! If it can cause catastrophic failures to the plastic charge pipe then it will do the same to the intercooler.

Sadly it was (within an acceptable budget anyway). Did phone around and Tune Tech helped too but best option was this. I saw the intercooler. The crack is huge. How it was not seen before is beyond me.

I am holding back doing it now anyway but at most I was thinking stage 1 with DP. The car needs attention on other fronts first, like a good detail as the paint work is shocking, before I mod it for additional performance.

I have the same issue. My paintwork is enough to make me want to sell the car however I know it can be sorted with a good detail, its just really shit when you wash a car and the swirls and scratches all over show up even more. One day an intelligent engineer will design a Black primer to be used with black cars! Then deep scratches will still be able to be fixed easily!

Your car is at least white lol.

But now you can at least enjoy your car, these cars still pull plenty hard in stock form!

So I was on the Dyno again today. Only managed 181wkw but that is definitely up quite a lot.

The Dyno graph line is very uneven/choppy and the guy reckons that it seems the timing is retarding or advancing (I think he said retarding). He suspects car may have previously been tuned but the timing is not set back to stock. I bought an octane booster to see if this sorts out the situation and if the car has more pull again (seems little sluggish after first filled tank since getting it back).

I don’t see on the MHD app how to record timing retard/advance. It only has timing CRK....whatever that is.

That's definitely a much better amount of power, I am not sure what your car should be pushing as its n55, What was the torque reading?

there should be timing cylinder 1 - 6. Then when you record a log you will see how timing is being affected in each cylinder.

corp

399Nm was the reading. The okes still reckon the lowest they have seen a stock N55 is 191wkw but usually the stock ones tested are +-200wkw. Best he has seen stock is 208wkw by the sound of things.
