moranor@axis said:Andy1GP I know we have discussed a bit via PM i will try not repeat to much here
I hope this does not come across as me trying to hard sell my products... i just want to give you the best info so you can make the right decisions i completely understand why you are looking at cheaper options... I to was looking at exactly the same stuff you are in the end i chose koni for my car because it made the most sense to me and lead to me selling their products...
the question i asked myself was do i really need to spend that much on suspension are the cheap kits really that bad? the answer i came to was another question: should the words 'are they really that bad' be attached to the suspension i want to fit to my car
I started to analyze how these 'cheap' suspension companies were able to sell at such a low price... like most people i at 1st assumed you were paying for name more than anything elsebut when i took a closer look i realized two factors make up the cost: research, development and production cost...
small guys:
the cheap guys do little to no R&D and try to reverse engineer what the big guys are doing... this does not always work out well because in order to successfully reverse engineer you need to understand why things were done that way in the 1st place...
to deduce manufacturing costs the cheap guys have to try and keep material costs low which often leads to inconsistent performance... another thing they do is use many shared components which leads to a one size fits all approach this means you dont often get a system that is optimized to work well with your car
Big guys:
like most people i assumed the big guys mostly played off name to justify their cost and i wanted to give the little guys a chance... i was very disappointed when the evidence stacked up in favor of the big guy
These guys have huge R&D budgets and spend it on making the best possible solution for each car though extensive testing... no cookie cutter one size fits all solutions here
They also have huge production facilities with very good equipment and stringent quality control to make sure components are well made... because they produce on such a large scale with good equipment it also means they can use better materials because they are more efficient at production...
In the end with my car i decided they the extra paid was not much compared to what you get when buying from one of the Big guys so for me it made more sense to pay more and get an awesome product over paying less (still a boat load of money) and getting something inferior...
I have spoken to leading suppliers about different cheap setups and they all come back with the same answer they cheap for a reason... some have even brought in some for testing and ended up binning them because they could not stand behind the productone guy i spoke to said he tried Vmaxx for a bit but the failure rate was 26% and cheap manufactures dont offer warranty to dealers they give you 10% free stock so if you dont build in a 16% markup your business is not sustainable... with the extra 16% prices end up not being very good anymore
like i said in the beginning im not trying to hard sell my products i just want you to make the right decision for your car i would be very happy if you chose a bilstein setup they also make very good stuff...
the cheapest i would go is something like BC racing coilovers they offer dampening adjustment so you can tune out most of the one size fits all problemi have read that they are the same as D2 and Yellow coilovers with less aggressive valving but this could just be forum hearsay
I was going to get BC racing coilovers for my car, but in the end i decided to rather pay a little more for a shock and spring combo from koni that came plenty R&D and a good warranty...
I hope this helps you decide if you have any questions i really dont mind giving input even if its on products i dont sell
Andy1GP said:TY Moranor, your advice is always appreciated. I would also prefer setting up coils and springs rather than coilovers. I'm rather passively weighing up my options as I've got my hands full with the 540 and the Audi at the moment.
