Crash's Jezebel in for a Rebuild-Rebuilding an e46 S54 UPDATE on page 26

OK. Update time...

Cylinder head is done. 3 Angle Valve cut on the valve seats has been complete. What this does is make the passageway for the air coming into the cylinder head more narrow, thus accelerating the air and giving great performance. The Vac Motorsport Valves with Single Groove cotters are also finally in. I bought them last year September... Finally got these bad boys in. They have a single groove at the top, which most if not all race cars have, apparently this is better than the usual 3 small grooves most cars have. Not sure why... The valves are inconel and can handle some crazy abuse. Here is a link below for you to check out the valves... they have come down nicely in price. Wish I bought them now instead of a year ago when they were almost double the price. Stupid me.

Here is a picture of the single groove -

Onto the block.

It has been dipped and all red paint from Matt's previous build has been stripped off. The cylinders have all been re honed to the CP pistons spec sheet. See below

The block is done, the first coat of paint goes on tonight, and we start re assembly tomorrow and this weekend.

Here is a pic of the block and the cylinders after being re honed.

Yes... those are ARP L19 head studs/bolts connected to the block. Those bad boys can hold down 1400hp before the block and head start to separate.

Will update more this weekend!!!

Thanks Peter for the help!

That's fantastic news mate - glad to see you guys are making such good progress.

That honing job is drool-worthy.

Who did the headwork? Did you also have them lap and cut back the valves?

No, nothing is made narrower in a proper 3-angle valve job- you're actually increasing flow.

A 3-angle valve job lends complimentary cuts to either side of the 45° base cut for the valve seat - a 60° throat cut to ease the approach angle to of mixture leading up to the seat, and a 30° top cut to reduce valve shrouding as it starts to lift from the seat... same principle applies for exhaust valves - the top cut helps to evacuate exhaust gases earlier and the throat cut gives it a smoother flowpath to get out of the exhaust port and into the exhaust.

Thus, with a valve job, flow is increased while not negatively influencing velocity. The size and shape of the ports plays a much bigger role in air velocity than the valve angles..

Thanks Colin, we were only expecting to get the block and head back tomorrow, so this is great for us.

Peter has some pics and video's of the block being worked on. Hopefully he will post some and explain a little about the process the block went through.

Just got off the phone with Peter. Seems BMW do not have stock of the S54 bottom end sump/oil pan gasket set. That being, a sump gasket, front and rear main seals, a number of O-rings and the oil filter housing gasket as well as timing chain cover gaskets.

So, until we can find this set, we cannot continue the build.

BMW reckon 4 - 6 weeks to get the parts from Germany. Alert Motor Spares has none in stock and are searching too. We will continue looking on our end, but might have to resort to buying the parts individually, which we do not want to do.

Victor Reinz apparently has a great set, but we cannot seem to find one.

A small correction on the earlier post.

We had to re sleeve the block to get it to be the same as the pistons.

Effectively the pics displayed is the block after having had new sleeves pressed in and honed.

As to the gasket set we will try and get a set together from various sources using REALOEM as a reference source for compatibility of parts.

I took some video of the block being re surfaced (decked) and will let Chris have it so that he can post it.
Not sure if usable we shall see.

Looks like 15 sleeps at present.

A good friend of mine ordered a full gasket set on an S62, so how the farm can you not get one for an S54.

Phone Wayne from Wayne's world...

But I share your pain, the E60 has been standing for more then two weeks waiting on 3 stupid seals on the gearbox.....

We got the top set from Victor Reinz, the Cylinder Head Gasket is from Vac but the bottom end is no where in sight...

This sucks so much balls.

Recently got some parts from Germany via the BMW dealer network in 10 days! And this after they told me it'll take 3 weeks. So the parts backlog in Germany has been reduced drastically. But yes, the BMW dealer network almost never have any M parts in stock.

When getting from Germany is normally just luck.

We will get the gasket set from the aftermarket.

I have cross referenced the parts we need and Chris will be collecting them on Tuesday.

All things being equal we assemble Wednesday.
