Just for interest sake here is the intercooler from an N54 335i compared to the 330d one. Same size and design only 2 more rows.

I spotted a c class intercooler on the gum. Don't know if you guy's might be interested in that one. :fencelook:

considering the n54 IC runs out of efficiency when the car is tuned and this build is looking at more power I am convinced the 330D IC will be too small but it is better than nothing

lets see what Crashes reading comes back with :)

Well, @ 9psi the volumetric flow rate from the supercharger is 758cfm. cubic feet per minute. (758 litres an hour).

Amount: 1 cubic foot per minute (cu ft/min) of flow rate
Equals: 28.32 Liters per minute (L/min) in flow rate

thus:

Amount : 758 cubic feet per minute (cu ft/min of flow rate)
Equals : 21 464.17 Liters per minute (L/min / flow rate)
Equals : 1 287 850.2 Liters per hour (L/hr / flow rate)

+1 to what Gizmo said.

Going U-flow right off the bat is going to make life a lot easier... considering that the Supercharger and your intake manifold both sit at the same end of the engine bay, your piping for a cross-flow intercooler (like the 330d / 335i units) is going to be unnecessarily intricate and costly.

A tight 180° bend at the opposite end of the cooler is going to cause a pressure drop, which will wind up getting blamed on the cooler, which then gets upgraded, only to still have a pressure drop.

As Gizmo has said, speak to Universal coolers, or perhaps have a look at this cooler - http://dropspec.co.za/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=454 - it's got the right design and looks compact enough to mount, provided you can wangle enough clearance on the thickness side of things.

Don't dismiss the Mr Turbo intercoolers too quickly, I know plenty of cars which have them fitted, and are making good power.

My Ute has a 450x300x76 fitted, and it seems to work well. The maximum intake temperature I recorded when testing was 42deg. In comparison, the stock intercoolers leave you with an intake temp of 55deg+.

+1 in keeping the piping simple. a G or U flow cooler will be the best bet at the end of the day.

Coming along nicely though

If you compare a fewer long rows intercooler vs many short rows intercooler which both have the same frontal area, heat transfer area and efficiency, you will find the many short rows give you a lower pressure loss.

I am taking a smoke break so thought it appropriate to update the post.

It gives me great pleasure to advise you all that the car will start normally aspirated.

This will accomplish a number of things:
1. It will afford time for proper research on the inter cooler
2. It will relieve some of the money pressure as the build has been expensive.....very expensive.
3. It will afford Chris the opportunity to asses the power of the engine after the rebuild on an apples for apples benchmark.
4. The engine will be run in with no stress.

So all things being equal I am mating box and engine together and will insert over tonight and tomorrow morning.

We have all the parts needed for the start up excluding anti freeze which we shall get in the morning and hopefully it will start Wednesday night Thursday morning.

Will obviously update with pics as we go along.

Good decision all round!
We await the pics and startup video :)

This car must be featured in some magazine after the build is completed! If it hasn't been already in the past :fencelook:

Would be good advertisement for Axis Engine Works and warn people to steer clear of the other crazy mechanics.

It will also show what love for a car can achieve!

Thanks for all the info guys... Gonna put it all to good use in the coming week. I have decided to not rush anything.

Good choice, so much care was taken putting this motor together, why rush now?

It's never a good idea to make decisions under pressure, at least now you can think things through properly.

Good luck with the start up

Ya... I actually wanted to compare before and after SC.

Gonna take it slow to run her in this month and get the right intercooler before installing the SC.

Good news. And I sure she will fire right up. With no problems.

This car has more followers and fans than some so called celebrities I know. :D

This is really great news. Since you are already married to the car the SC can be inserted whenever the love affair needs more fire :) You will enjoy the car immensely for now. And for the future.

Well done to a great conclusion :praise: Road trip is in order :joy:
