Yup... e90 cooler. Not sure what the flow rates are of said intercooler. Will do some research on it. But I'm pretty sure it will flow better than some no name brand R1000 IC from Mr. Turbo.

I wanted to mount a Mishimoto IC but their prices doubled over Christmas. So I cancelled that idea.

What boost are e90 330d's running?

I forgot to incorporate altitude correction for the boost, but the stock 330d's run around 20-25 psi.

bliksem,thats alot

Waiting on spark plugs R1700 for 6

As I said if it were not for SC motor is complete to go in.

Good choice on the cooler, it will work beautifully with the level of boost and volumes the charger is supplying....

The D runs around 2 bar boost so the build quality will be perfect... Get it acid washed and cleaned up and fitted...

Awesome workmanship Alex..:bravo:

Thank you for the input.

I shall take it in for a scrub

you also need to consider the M revs up way higher than the D you looking at two very different air flows between the two...

one is high pressure low volume the other is low pressure high volume... air behaves very differently between the two

the 330D IC is nice because it fits the space and is available cheap but you will probably find its not optimum once the engine is run in and you start boosting at high RPM

what I would do is monitor IAT before and after the IC if these stay in check then i would get a boost gauges to measure the pressure drop at high RPM... the IC may not cool enough at the higher flow rate or it may cause a blockage limiting the boost reaching the engine

maybe you get lucky and it just happens to work

It will work.....and as Crash mentioned, better than a Mr Turbo jobbie.

Would actually love to see some input from netercol and phantom on this....

LOL. We never said this or any other intercooler was chosen. We were testing what fits and then decided to check with you guys on what you think about the flow of this IC.

As I said, I wanted a mishimoto G line intercooler, which is what Active Autowerke uses, but the intercooler has doubled in price over december and shipping it here will cost around 5k. Yes, 5 grand. I couldn't believe it.

Gizmo, what would you recommend. I have the sizes I need, would a no name brand intercooler from Mr. Turbo really be suffice?

BTW if you do decide to go the Mr Turbo route, gimme a shout my friends is a dealer for them he would get it at +- 20% off the listed price.

IMO OEM BEHR Intercooler VS Mr Turbo...I`d take the BEHR.

Well, @ 9psi the volumetric flow rate from the supercharger is 758cfm. cubic feet per minute. (758 litres an hour).

If you are wondering where I got this conversion, remember page 3 of this build. I was able to calculate the pulley size needed to get 9psi out of the supercharger with the M3 crank. Using those calculations you can see the speed the impeller is at and thus how much flow it creates.

So, I need an intercooler that can use this flow rate.

If anyone is able to get me a flow rate, even if it's in another unit, I can convert it to CFM and check.

Thanks.

look at it this way:

the D has high pressure low flow air when compared to the SC s54...

in the D the air should be hotter and spend more time in the IC both of these make the IC more efficient

I have no doubt the D IC is superior in terms of efficiency and end tank design but it is designed for a very different use and so could be out performed for this application by a more crude design that is closer to what is needed

Crash how does the D IC compare to the mishimoto item in terms of size?

Go see universal coolers and get a 100mm intercooler core that will fit in the space but it must be many short rows opposed to fewer long rows. Pics included. Make up your own end tanks and mounts which is rather easy and you will have the most efficient intercooler there is, far better than anything imported thats for sure! I will be making my own later this year for my turbo build.
