Right so here is the run down!
Home after 600km in about 5 hours last Thursday. When I opened the garage and saw this dejected looking, primer covered, flat tired non-starter of a car my only thought was
"WTF have I just spent £10000 on??" She is a lot shabbier than I expected and looked so sad I was seriously dejected as I sold my pristine Cooper S to fund her.
Any way, boosted the flat battery and pumped the flat. She would not start at all. Turns out the alarm when flat will lock the car out, a good thing if I KNEW that! Once the alarm was
powered she started on the button.
She has non-equal length headers, that deep rumble lope-lope-lope sound is amazing!!
First stop was a tyre shop, the two front tires were over 8 years old, mismatched and perished, one with a slow leak. Pretty scary to drive her like that. Two new fronts and alignment done,
I got under way. Once out on the open road and after a few high speed bends I started to lose the feeling I was driving a fragile old wreck, she's tatty but not fragile. I think the fact that she is lower than a sandsharks belly, strut brace, new tires etc. gives her such an incredible 'planted' feeling on the the high speed curves, a couple of times I thought I had over cooked it but she just hunkered down and took the corner with very little body roll, as a Mini driver I am impressed
The first 100km or so I took it slow, just rumbling along at 2000rpm or so, loving the effortless lazy engine and the gentle boom of the exhaust, as I left a toll gate I planted my right foot in 1st and 2nd. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. The sudden snarly beast she turned into made me let out an involuntary laugh! Red Rocket indeed! I was smiling for the next 50 miles

Once the sun was down I settled down in the amber lit cockpit at 90mph and just cruised home, even at that speed she is very quiet with no rattles or squeaks. (Other terrible noises though!)
In short, all my misgivings about this car are gone. I may bought a rusty dog of a car but I will make her perfect over the next year or two!
Oh, the fuckers at the port stole the Sony head unit, the batteries out the remote and worst of all the rosewood Alpina gear lever!
I have made a list of gremlins and dropped her off at Tune-Tech this morning where she will be sorted over the next two weeks, then the body work. Once all good I'll be a happy man!
