Sorry for the noobnessness but how does this differ from the local 635 Coupe's we got

Only stupid answers mate!

One of the last sharks to be brought into SA was a 09/84 build date. The cars were still made up until 1989 so there were noticible differences.

Mine is an '86 so not too many differences, slightly different brakes and most importantly is 'chippable'. Prior to ~1984 you will have to replace the AFM and ECU to change the mapping. Also the vast majority of SA cars were automatics. Manuals were pretty scarce.

Other than that not too many differences. My main reason for importing was cost and choice, I wanted a red/black manual. I have never seen that combo in SA. The cost part.....well, as you've read that's gone right out the window!!!:blab:

Small update, the head is back on after installing an Alpina B10 camshaft, the full stainless steel exhaust + headers is on and the car has been chipped to suit the mods! Next up rolling road for a power run!

Well.... The exhaust is £950, so R11000. Expensive, but full stainless with headers. To get one made as a one-off here by van der Linde? I hesitate to ask....

The chip is £70, R1000, cheap as ....bad pun

The cam is also painful, £335 for the billet cam plus followers, head skim, waterway repairs and labour. Basically a proper job. Not sure yet but probably around £550.

I will terrify everyone with prices once my baby has landed in Durban :)

Absolute beauty!!! :praise:

I was going to import an E39 M5 (crystal blue - awesome colour! only became available here recently on some 3 series and x3's I think - or another was interlagos blue, see pic attached) as at the time could not find a decent one for sale here and over in the UK there are plenty of really showroom examples for great prices (4k - 6.5k pounds) with less than 100k km. That equates to around R50k - R70k for an awesome, well maintained, showroom condition legend! Then the pain started with the burocratic red tape this side and the various duties. Its an absolute nightmare and by the time all the import duties and penalty duties for bringing in a car that was available locally at one stage it started to add up, in fact the duties/penalties etc were way more than the car!!!

For those of you wanting to do this, be very prepared and patient with the powers that be here! Also if the law is about to change then best get on ur scooters as mentioned!
Good luck to those of you embarking on this journey :argh:

You must be very excited by now.

Massively!! Still a fair amount of work ahead though, but engine, suspension, bodywork all mostly done. Just interior and electric need some TLC

Man you have danglers of inordinate size! :D

Nah, I'm just obsessive and probably rather stupid. In all honesty I should have sold the car when I first discovered the rust, but decided to save her instead. Probably stupid :)

A correction sir.....petrolhead and stupidity are synonymous

How many people do you know who will spend an inordinate amount of time correcting a small flaw in an engine compartment eg the wrong type of thickness washer under a nut...........(other than me)?
