Hi All,
I am in the process of bringing in a Shark, the one true Shark.
After a year of searching SA for a good one, I have found only bangers and overpriced prima donnas! (The guy with the Black '84 with Lotus White interior will die before selling!)
So I decided to import. The motor industry is lobbying to take this option away from us, so If you want one you need to be quick! I figured I would keep a log of my trials and tribulations so that if any others want to follow this route they can. I will also be keeping a list of costs so you make make your mind up. Ideally, and in theory it would be significantly cheaper to import a UK car to SA. In practice it won't be but the choice is greater and there are benefits such as parts and upgrades unavailable here in SA.
Blog starts!
1. December 2011,
Import permit finally issued after supplying 6 affidavits to ITAC, am using Springbok Imports for this service, so far it has taken 6 months to get a permit, patience is a virtue when dealing with Government! You supply a VIN and Engine number etc. and then change it at a later date as the car you wanted will have been sold by the time you get a permit.
2. January 2012,
Bought a 1986 635CSI off Ebay, unseen, for 2000 quid. Although seller was forthcoming with details, lots of work expected. UK has RUST.
Car comes with many Alpina goodies, 150k km on the clock, Genuine Alpina 17x8 and 17x10 wheels, is Zinnobar red, 5 speed manual and black Sports leather interior. The Perfect Combination.
3. February 2012,
Car (Unamed as of yet) shipped to Fritz Bits in Taunton for some TLC. Lots of rust and misc. things to fix. She is beautiful on the outside and inside but underneath needs some work, sills, crossmember, struts etc.
R20k deposit left with Fritz, work starting soon.
Planned upgrades depending on funds include;
1. Full stainless exhaust, inc headers
2. Alpina B10 Cam
3. Chip to suit
4. 540i/750i/850i brakes (bolts straight on)
5. Top struts, Bilstein B4s, sway bars.
Some pics for you.
