Speed bumps

Is it me or are you increasingly being pressurised in going quicker over speed bumps? A recent incident (among many): just the other day, after I dropped off my brother at King Shaka Airport, I drove away down the ramp which had several speed cluster cones/bubbles (you know the ones which you have to really go slow/ carefully over), and whilst not crawling over them, I went slow enough. A Fortuner behind me seemed irritated and suddenly over took me, casting me a stare like I committed a crime and rushed off, looking into his review mirror waiting for me to get nearer. I carried on traversing carefully over these bumps on the left lane and he eventually left.

Really gets to me at times since some of us travel with babies and older people in the car. Also, suspension and wheel alignment gets affected, as you'd expect.

Most people on the roads are annoyed.. I don't pay much attention to other people. Had a similiar incident driving to our local driving range on washboard gravel, was taking it easy but not even that slow. Land Rover (those old cheapy ones) got annoyed and also overtook.

When I also parked I gave him a stare, he did not really know what to think.. Think he realised that was not cool on his part. Anyway proceeded to go practice my swing and forgot all about it.

Its worse here in our "Estate"!
Most people here drive bakkies or SUV (s) etc and the speed bump are like damn mountains.

Yet most folk dont care if they scrape their cars and gives me the stare or sometime the finger.

Has to be in the top 10 of worst speed bumps in KZN! You have to go over these at like 1kph:smashScreen::smashScreen::smashScreen:

Unfortunately some people like these see the vehicle as just a daily device so don't really care about any potential damage due to the severity of the speed hump. I see guys in larger SUVs sped across the turtle shells and don't bother about slowing down. I drop off my kids at a school where the last km is across a gravel path and the some parents in the morning try to turn it into a rally course.

i agree with chefDJ... people don't respect their cars they just see it as it gets me from where i am to where i am going. :thumbdo:

in the afternoons on the way to virgin active in Bedfordview me and my 2 friends who also drive BMW's crawl over the speed bumps on van buuren road and people always throw their hands around as if they directing some musical orchestra. Alot of the times looking back in my rearview mirror fearing they are going to hit into the back of me.

The thing i hate the most is when someone says "its just a car" :RedNo::RedNo: but each to its own i guess

I mostly just ignore them ... Sometimes I lower the rear blind , look at them , then set it back up again . That realllly pisses them off :)

I still think the worst bumps in Durban are those towards the science block at UKZN howard collage , my standard E30 lost two exhaust systems on those bumps.

Common denominator in all the reply's SUV

No offence to anyone here driving one, but generally they tend to intimidate other drivers in'smaller' cars.

Be it flying over speed bumps or generally just thinking that they own the road because they are in a bigger car :RedNo:

More often than not I get SUV's just barging and pushing their way in because I have a smaller car (Yaris as a daily)

You learn to ignore it though.

totally agree , I like my front bumper & lip I dont need it getting scrapped just so that the car behind me can get to where they going a whole 2 seconds quicker .Boils down to no patience on the roads ,lack of courteous drivers and we wonder why there are so many accidents on the road.

As a matter of interest, does anybody know whether there are regulations regarding speed bump design and sizing?

Start rant.
They've recently put up new speed bumps at my work place, Route 21 corporate park. They are absolutely ridiculous. The small and tall kind, do you know what I am talking about?
Some of them were so bad that my car could not be driven over them without scraping. I have an E46 with Sport pack, it ain't no Lamborghini!

Some of the speed bumps had to be cut down because of this.

In addition to my personal car woes, our company deals with solar (photovoltaic) panels. Our drivers now have to be extra cautious for fear of cracking a panel.

Just the other day they put up these same style of speed bumps in my residential estate! I want to tear my hair out!

Now I mean no offense to any potential SUV drivers but it seems as if these awful speed bumps have been implemented because dick, bob, sue and jane drivers either a Hilux, a fortuner or a Ford ranger! :rage:

And you know what, I don't blame them. Look at our roads and now the "insert strong language" speed bumps!

If these speed bump companies could please wake up, because not everybody drives an SUV and I'm tired of planning my routes around their vehicle damaging road obstacles.
End rant.

I found a proper mountain today in Douglasdale! Scraped the underside of my E90 properly. To the point that I'm actually scared to look underneath to see the aftermath :blueCry:

:smilebounce: I got a local RAV4 owner back the other day. She was riding my rear bumper at a speed bump and bad road surface in my area while in the MCoupe. But I also drive a Supercharged 4.8 Nissan Patrol with lift, big tyres and a bullbar. She got noticeably flustered when I rode her rear bumper a few days later...
