MUCH better.
I also had the same thing with the ex black M5. It was quite easy to remove.
Just check for the channeling on the driver's footwell cover. It is a nasty little thing to get everything in place and most people just push it in and hope for the best. Result - no air to your feet

I am pulling the M5 dash next week to sort the aircon and some rattles. You are welcome to bring the car over, and we pull both dashes simlutaneously.

I must have replaced E34 dashes at least 10 times and now have it down to a fine art. I know exactly where every single nut bolt clip and wire goes.

The best side effect is the car feels brand new after a good refit of the dash.

I removed the footwell cover and channel to try and see whats going on. I can see the flap opening and closing as it should, but there's no air coming through it. I could also see some broken plastic after I squeezed my head against the pedals to see what's going on behind the dash and all it's inner witchcraft bits.

I only unscrewed the antenna and unplugged the jack that goes the the radio. Those 2 bits is still there. Could I use that same jack and say plug in an MP3 player? Would the radio pick it up?

That would be awesome. Just name the time. :thumb:

That reminds me, do you still have the air vent bits you mentioned the first time I visited you? I'll give you something for them of course. As in my above post, I can see some broken plastic behind the dash. So there will be something that needs replacing.

Thanks guys. The car still needs a lot of work, but it's some expensive stuff which I will need to save up for. I want to get the rust fixed and then have the whole body resprayed... eventually.

BmwFrikkie: You should post in the 5 series section :thumb:

Some picks I took over the holiday. It rained early morning and this is what I found when I opened the front door. Sorry about the quality, the batteries in the camera were dead so I had to use my phone.

(Click on pick to few large version)

Then this happened the day I came back home.

I was over taking and the strip just suddenly ripped loose. Then it waved about in the wind banging on the roof. Fortunately it didn't leave any permanent damage to the paint. I stopped along side the road to try and push it back, but it was hopeless... the clips that's suppose to hold it was done. I was pretty pissed as this is a pretty stupid design. Now... it is still the original windscreen so I guess it's safe to say that's it's also the original clips, but it still wasn't a good idea by who ever came up with it at BMW. I then pulled the entire strip off and continued home.

Went to BMW to get new clips. There's 16 clips currently so I wanted to replace them with 16 new clips. These clips are nothing special as you'll see in the pick below, but BMW wanted R80... EACH. I told them they can keep it.

Note all the crap that build up under the strip:

So I cleaned all the clips with a toothbrush and soap water. Then rinsed with clean water.

Then added some silicone on each clip. Sorry, thought I did take some more picks, but I guess I didn't. I then pushed the strip back and I doubt it will be going anywhere anytime soon. If you have an E34, it might be a good idea to check the clips on yours. They are really terrible :shakehead:

You should see how it looked after it came off @260 on a certain black M5 :fencelook:

BTW - earlier in your thread you mentioned having difficulty turning the speed sensitive volume control off. How do you do it, since i hate that feature and i cant figure it out on mine.

Funny story actually... the car stood for about 3 weeks while I was sorcing a new clutch kit and during that time the battery ran flat and was disconnected. After that the speed sensitive volume was just gone :dunno:

So maybe try and disconnect your battery for a long period (Over night maybe?) and see if it goes away. I could never find anything to turn off other than the cut the wire for it at the back... not that I could ever found out what wire that is either.

The strip itself doesn't seem to be the problem. It's the clips that's suppose to hold it in place. The strip cover these clips so I don't think the sun does that much damage if any. My clips didn't feel brittle at all.

I am so damn tempted to recover my interior in that caramel colour!

Not sure if it would work with the white exterior?

Don't, A light interior does not go so well with a light exterior, if the exterior I would have said go for it..........

Aaaand you have a white M5 with a black interior what more could you want? I think you are just looking for things to do on the car now that everything is pretty much sorted

You can go and check your nearest Masterparts. They should have bearings, although I don't know what brand would be good. I've not had to replace the bearings on my E34 yet.

If you want more feedback you can ask in the 5 series section in this link: http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/forumdisplay.php?fid=20

Update. Bit of a long read, but it's pretty much everything about the struggle to sort the heavy clutch pedal from day one. Those who already know the story can skip to just under the first pick.

Some of you will know that ever since I got the car I've had big problems with the super heavy clutch pedal. I talking knee hurting heavy here. My knee started with some aching not long after I got the car and started hurting a few weeks ago because of clutch.

Shortly after I got the car I took it to a guy here in Somerset West and he said that it could only be the clutch it self, or the splines to be more specific. BMW wanted about R9k for a clutch kit. Yea right...

Then the slave cylinder failed and I had the same mechie replace it and it made no change to the heavy pedal. Time goes on and then one day there's a bang and the pedal drops to the floor while I'm in traffic. The clutch fluid line exploded. So I took the plunge and ordered a clutch kit from the USA (about R5200 + shipping and customs and it's exactly the same as what you get from the stealers) and have the same mechie fit a new line and the clutch kit. 3 weeks later I can drive the car again and wouldn't you know it... the pedal is still just as heavy.

Then Rick540 said that the car might have the wrong slave cylinder and that it was probably replaced with the wrong one by one of the previous owners. Now here's where things get a little interesting...

RealOEM does not list our E34 540i 6 speeds with a manual box... there's only a auto to choose from even if you put the vin in. Not even Rick540 could find the correct info. So... I looked at the Europe 6 speed and there they list that the slave should be 26mm. The one on my car was 20mm. I know this because the company the mechie got the slave from only lists the one slave for all E34's. So it's kinda not his fault for fitting the wrong slave, but at the same time I feel he should have made sure with a car this rare.

I searched high and low and for quite some time, but couldn't get the correct size slave anywhere but the agents. Eventually I got the correct slave cylinder from BMW... only R2150 :mmm: :(

Once I opened the box I couldn't help but think that it's pretty huge. Here's a pick of the cylinder next to a CD cover:

So this past weekend I was on a mission to swap out the old cylinder with the new one. Did all sorts of research and PM'd Rick540 to make sure I've got everything covered for a nice smooth swap. So I get the car in the air, put down some news paper and a towel to lie down on and crawl under the car. Take my torch to have a good look and I see the nut is slightly damaged. At this point I pretty much knew I wasn't getting it off, but I tried anyway. So I take the 11mm spanner and carefully have a go. It's WAY to tight and I can't use the ring side of the spanner as there's a pipe going right through the middle of the nut I need to loosen. Man, was I pissed.

So I took the car to the same mechie mentioned above and who worked on it last. Told him that I've spend close to R10k with parts and labour on what he said and that I would like him to swap out the cylinders.

So this morning he does so:

Now it might just be that I'm not used to it, but I think it might almost be easier than my 318's pedal. :):)
I do think that it needs a more proper bleed as there is some play on the pedal. For about 2cm it's just loose and rests on the pressure (not sure if this makes sens). I also think it's a little spongy at the top, but I may just need to get used to it. Will see.

Right now I'm just ssssoooo relieved that I've finally got it sorted and hopefully my knee will ache less now. Trust me... think of a heavy clutch you might have came across in your time... mine was heavier. Some the guys here can back me on this.
