N20 vs B48

Well , I have never owned an N20 motor F30 320i but have rented many of them when ever I went on holiday all were like new low mileage cars, And we purchased a new facelift F30 320i this year with the new B48 engine .

My View is that the new engine is much much better then the old one , I found the old N20 engine to be very sluggish on take off , and not as powerful as I had expected it to be , it wasn't bad but not so fun to drive. The new engine is so much better , All the issues I had experienced with the old engines are gone , The steering also feels much better in the new facelift . Acceleration is much better and the general feel and experience of driving it is so much more fun .

I did find the N20 to feel "Under powered" for the size of the car . With the new engine , not so much . You feel a lot more confident overtaking with the new engine then the old . My uncle has the older engine F30 and his taken our car for a short test and also mentioned , the new engine having much better power and acceleration then his . I felt that the older engine had some sort of Lag or flat sport on initial acceleration and I found this to be very irritating as non of our other cars suffered such , My E46 with the N42 engine seemed more peppy or snappy then that engine, The new car does not seem to suffer from this .

This is just my view from experiencing both cars .

I have a 125i with the n20 motor ad test drove the new 330i with the b48.

the b48 revs much cleaner , and seems to have way more midrange punch. Sound really nice as well but.................the sound is probably faked.
