330i B48 after diesel ownership?

Hi all

I’ve subconsciously been looking for a decent F30 330d to eventually replace my 320d at some point — either pre-LCI or LCI. The problem is that prices don’t seem to be dropping much, and the condition of some of the cars I’ve come across is questionable. Finding a genuinely clean, well-maintained 330d at a reasonable price seems to be getting harder.

Recently, though, I’ve started noticing a few F30 330i’s popping up with the B48, and it’s got me seriously considering whether the 330i might actually be the smarter buy.

We know the B48 has a pretty good reputation for reliability, but I’d like to hear from people who have actually owned them for high mileage.

At what mileage would you still be comfortable buying a B48-powered F30 330i with the intention of using it as a daily driver? Would you be comfortable buying one at 150 000km if the service history and condition were good? And what changes once you get beyond 200 000 km?

Obviously, at that mileage I’d expect age-related issues to start becoming more relevant. Plastic cooling-system components, hoses, seals, mounts, pulleys, etc. aren’t going to last forever. So what are the typical B48 issues and maintenance items that start appearing at 200 000 km+? Is there anything particularly expensive that I should be budgeting for?

Then there’s the performance side.

I’m currently coming from a tuned 320d, so I’m used to having a lot of torque very low down. On paper, the 330i obviously has significantly more power and a much stronger top end, but I’m wondering how noticeable the loss of low-RPM torque actually is in real-world driving.

Would going from a tuned 320d to a 330i feel like a downgrade in the way the car responds at low RPM?

More specifically, what I’m interested in is everyday driving rather than 0–100 figures. Pulling out to overtake at 60–100 km/h, accelerating from 80–120 km/h, joining a highway, passing someone without necessarily dropping several gears, etc.

Would the 330i’s extra power make the overtaking ability night and day compared with a tuned 320d, or would the diesel’s low-down torque still make the 320d feel more effortless in those situations?

I know the 330i will ultimately be the faster car and should have a much better top end, but I’m trying to understand whether it feels faster on normal road driving, or whether I’d constantly be missing that diesel shove.

The 330i’s are even rarer than the 330d’s here, but the interesting thing is that they seem to be roughly R100k cheaper than comparable 330d’s. At that price difference, the 330i becomes very difficult to ignore — especially if the B48 is likely to be less troublesome as these cars age.

So, for those who have actually owned or driven both, I’d really appreciate some honest opinions.

Should I wait and save up a bit longer, the G20 pre-lci gets added to the equation.

Keen to hear your input.

Craig

Hi Craig, as a current F30 330d owner I went through a similar exercise. I sold my E90 330d and went on the hunt (took me 18 months admittedly) for something ZF8 driven of a similar size to the E90. Naturally, I immediately wanted an F30 330d, but the 330i had a similar impact on my thought process as it is doing to yours. However, I just found the drive of the 330d to be impossible to ignore compared to the 330i even with the price difference. I mean the market showing a R100k premium (as things are going I see that R100k premium stretching its legs to R150k with the 330d pricing) for the d over the i does mean something. It isn't just "hype", the 330d is just such a good package. I haven't owned a 20d but do have a mate with a tuned 320d and I'd take that over the stock 330i even. The driving dynamic from the diesels just suits the platform so well. Now not to say the petrol's don't but the diesels IMO are better.

I may be inclined/forced to sell my 330d in the coming months for a double cab sadly, if you'd like to chat we can.

Hi Bud,

I bought my 2018 F30 320i on 96k and I'm currently on 135k and its still my current daily. Like anyone in the same boat looking for a BMW to daily, I was looking for a 320d but the prices that they were at compared to the 320i on the used market, I couldn't really justify putting in the extra money so I bit the bullet and went for the petrol instead.

Like any aging BMW, things will eventually need maintenance especially after 100k mileage. Just like my M140i, a few of my cooling system components had to be replaced but much later only around 120k:
  • Waterpump,
  • Thermostat,
  • Oil Filter Housing,
  • Coolant Hoses
  • Coolant Flange
Since replacing these parts, I've had trouble free mileage with this car as my daily to date. The B48 is a very nippy engine and BMW finally got it right in terms of 4 cylinders after the problems with the N20 in the pre lci cars. I haven't driven an F30 330i, but I have driven my cousin's G20 330i and I'll admit that the 330i power definitely makes a difference compared to the 320i. This can always be sorted with a downpipe and a light tune on a 320i which is what I'm planning on doing through @Xcede Performance.

In terms of fuel consumpion, I got around 8-10 with a mix of in town and freeway driving. The lowest I've ever gotten on this car was around 5.5 to and back from Wildcoast so it definitely has potential to be a fun and efficient daily at the same time.

As much as I love my 320i as a daily and I cannot fault it in any way, if prices of the 320d were the same I would have gone with the 320d. Here we comparing the 330d to the 330i where the difference will be a lot more noticeable compared to 320i vs 320d since its 2.0 vs 3.0.

You still will have to do preventative maintenance on both and I'm sure service costs on the 330d will be higher compared to the 330i being a diesel car. If you can wait a little bit or maybe stretch your budget, I'd say go for the 330d. But if not, you are definitely safe in the 330i.

Resale on the 330d will also be a bit better as well.

What about an F30 335i since they also within the same ballpark of pricing ?

I have not owned a B48 but they are not too different compared to the B58 - pretty much the same issues.
Cooling system & oil filter housing issues as Nishcat mentioned above along with valve cover and injectors needing to be replaced around 100k to 150k generally.
Prone to LSPI if not maintained or tuned correctly.

Buying one with 150 000km would not worry me or scare me away. I went to test drive a 330i before buying my 540i, after I had considered a 530d.
The 330i lacks torque compared to the 530d. You need to rev it to get power, low down I felt it lacked. The B58 certainly has more torque down low and makes for a more relaxed overtaking experience but it is still not a diesel - quickly put the car into Sport+ and its generally not a problem though.

I'd say the fuel consumption Nishcat mentioned is spot on. If I am not mistaken, the 30i has slightly different pistons compared to the 20i (compression ratio I believe differs). However you can safely tune a 20i to make similar power to a 30i.

Spot on here bud. To Stage 2 a 20i, you need to do a downpipe otherwise the car won't handle it. @Sabretooth tiger would have knowledge with regards to tuning since he tuned his B48 when he had it.
