Right so today I had a bit of a photoshoot of a different kind of my car, there pics were taken (in a very loose sense of the work taken :)) with a infrared camera. So the camera "sees" the temperature radiated from objects. (When you hold your hand close to a heat source and you feel the heat from the object on your hand, the camera sees this heat, its just a lot more sensitive than you hand :))
(In the pics lighter colours are higher temperatures and darker are lower temperatures)

Brighter than your M3, but when it's red hot you don't need a camera to "see" the heat :hope-my-fake-smile-works-again:

@fordkoppie: The brakes would have looked like a really bright light source would have looked to a normal visual camera.
