Thanks Bud, if my little one had his way, he'd be strapped in there, screaming 'go faster', immediately followed by 'too fast'

So had a break at the coast with family last week and my trip down saw me achieve a 6.0L /100km average. I always keep to the speed limit so my average speed over the distance was a tad over 100km/h.

I was in a hurry back home and completely forgot to even check the consumption back as well as the average for the entire trip.

My car has covered decent since i got it 10 months ago, currently getting some TLC from a1exander and lysis.

Was great meeting a1exander and gathering so much of knowledge in the short time we spoke. The car is currently in for an oil change, replacement of diesel cartridge and coolant flush. I also requested a general check of the car to ensure all is good.

We also agreed to do the engine flush.

Its the first time i have been without my car and my 3yr keeps reminding me every time we are in the garage that it aint there...lol:biglol:

I know its a bit late but I had to put the update:

As mentioned above my car was at A1exander and Lysis for and oil change, coolant flush, engine flush, fuel filter change and general inspection of the car.
Below are the pics from the service
Doesnt look too bad at all

There were no leaks to be seen

Covers off, a bit of dust, but all good

all Cleaned up as well, thanks guys

Products being used.

All done...

Big thanks to A1exander, Lysis and Moranor, awesome service, great guys and more especially putting up with my questions along the way.

After inspection there are some suspension parts that will need replacing in the near future which again will be going to Axis.

What a dream machine!!

I would absolutely love to own something like this before I die.....

What a pity I have not started to work in Angola 10 years ago.
First priority is something for my son (21- and 3rd year mech eng)

Enjoy your ride and thanks for sharing.

Thanks , just to give you an idea of how much i love the car.,. i needed to go to the shop yesterday afternoon, so quickly got into the Beemer and shot off to the shop, unfortunately the drive was so short that the car had probably just warmed up when i got to the shop. The shop didnt have what i needed, so decided well at least i am going to enjoy my car and went for 20min mad drive....

Lets say the wife was already worried and about to call when i pulled into the garage...:biglol:

In terms of the car , i feel like I dont drive it enough( or miss driving it), but the mileage i put on says other otherwise, 21 fuel ups, 16000km from december 2012.... :inlove::inlove:

Lovely car Sash. I've got an X5 3.0D E70 which is based on the E60 5 series if I'm not mistaken. I've got the same engine as you. I've heard that the swirl flaps are problematic on diesel BMW's and would like to know if you had yours attended to. I'm not sure if it affects all diesel BMW's or only the fours. Any advice on these?

Thanks sunnyj,

Yes the engines are the same and i have also been doing some reading on teh swirl flaps. I havent had mine looked at, but upon initial research i was led to believe that BMW had improved on the flaps on the later models. More recently i have read that a few e60's had suffered from swirl flap failure, but cannot recall whether it was on the LCI or not, or if they are different.

I will do more research and chat to people in the know i decide from there. What mileage is yours on at the moment?

Mine has done 106000 km and runs beautifully. I have also been reading up on swirl flaps on these engines but have not found any definitive info whether it is a problem on these engines or not. Should I find any useful info I will post it on the forum. It is a bit annoying though that BMW has not been able to design such a basic feature on a car :argh: - they are butterfly valves after all that's been around on various manufacturers cars for donkeys years.

The issue was apparent on the older models, and the LCI had better stronger flaps, not to say it cant happen though.

Would like to know the opening and closing can be changed with software...hmmmm...?

As far as I have read the new one are much improved and not prone to ingestion.

a1exander that is somewhat reassuring:thumbs: however it would be good to get a definitive answer on this. Perhaps if someone has some inside info from somebody who works in a BMW service centre. I've traweled the net and could not find anything that says the newer engine M57N2 have had swirl flap failures. There are people who are removing the flaps though as a preventative measure but I wonder if they are just being overly cautious for a problem that has already been rectified in the design by BMW :fencelook:

I did a lot of reading on the issue and it seems that it did happen with the earlier engines but after the redesign only third party "evidence" of it having happened or conjecture that it could possibly still happen. Maybe I didn't look hard enough but I didn't find any definitive cases of it having happened to someone with the redesigned ones.

George Smooth had a peek at mine when he removed the manifold and took a few pics etc as well and said they looked perfectly fine so at least I can not worry about it for a while. Maybe if I do 100k kms I'll check again.
