Hi there guys,

I am looking for any input please....

I am looking at buying a 2008 BMW 740i.... It's sitting at 150 000km, it will be my daily drive so just want to make sure its the right choice.

The problem is that it is VERY hard to find these with a full service history....

I did have a look at a clean 750i (98 000km) with a full service history, but I have been told the 750i is allot heavier on fuel?

Whats your guys views?

Thanks

I can't imagine the maintenance on an 08 7 series... A guy on here did a full rebuild so maybe search for that thread? But if fuel is even a vague hassle I'd rather look into a 530d - you could get a nicely spec'd e60 and those are light on fuel as well as reasonably well equipped.

Why do you want a 7er?

Fuel isn't really a major headache and neither the services, my work pays for my fuel and a give me an X amount per month for all maintenance.

The reason I am looking at a 7 is the luxury of the car and the smooth drive. and they aren't priced that bad. And I like the look of it.

I have also been looking at the 7 series and am quite surprised as the value for money one gets with one of these. Will not even consider a petrol one though as the diesel is just so much nicer and better on fuel. With a chip you will not even look back. I think the 2008 is still the old shape? Luxury with a capital L!

The 2008 is the facelift of the E65.
True, it's allot of car for the money.
I just want to know if the later models gave any serious problems.

The later models are the best to have.

You will want a 750i over a 740i purely because more common and less troublesome, more power, and fuel consumption is not that much of a difference between the 2. Also, comes standard with more features unlikely to be loaded on a 740i.

Both 740i and 750i of that generation with the N62 motor will suffer from leaky valve stem seals at higher mileages. This normally manifests in a smoky idle, puff of smoke on takeoff and increased oil consumption. A dealer repair will cost R20-25k.

These engines can also develop minor oil leaks from the valve covers, vanos actuators, front timing covers and the dreaded oil cooler thermostat housing.

The engines are very solid otherwise.

I cannot see that a 740i will be more economical that a 750i, so why not enjoy the torque and power of the 750i.
