Dave F and a K&N 57i don't use metal,they use a heat resistant polymer.The E36 has a crap airbox and gains can be had from a CAI.The E46 has a much better airbox therefore no gains from a CAI....An OEM clean filter rates just as well as any performance panel filter out there on the market....

Wouldn't it then be money better spent to just replace the e36 air box with one from a e46, rather than get a CAI kit or some other aftermarket stuff?

CAI and that are good. Thats why they so expensive. The normal cone filters with the stupid head shield is crap.

But what if you keep the standard air box on the 36 and take those rubber ram tubes directly from the bottom air vent straight into the airbox with a pan filter?
Im not sure how the e36 box looks but im sure that will be the cheaper better thing to do....I like to look under the bonnet and see the standard look.

Hadn't really thought about that option to be honest.I guess it would work :thumb: I would have to have a look and see :thumbsup:

Fitted an AFE CAI with heatshield...trust me, made a difference at top end as the 328i run out of steam top end. As for the sound, make up your mind after hearing my car:drool:

Ai Ai its been proven on Dyno's that con filters give you less power and even the flat pan K&N filters give you less performance so why waste time and money

Because Some people on this thread want some answers about the options available.. & Cause some people like the sound it gives..

For which car?On the E36 their have been proven gains witha Dave F induction kit of up to 15hp although that was an individual case and most E36 see gains of 7-10hp with this kit.

On the E46 their has been a minimal gain with the same kit because the airbox is good.

However most people buy them for the induction sound

Where from?

One is the old feed for the standard box and another which you can either run from behind the grill or as some people do and tap into the brake duct

im just going to insulate the whole intake system as much as i can to keep the air as cool as possible...im only doing it because it will cost me almost nothing i dont think ill see a big gain/any real gain but its worth a try
