Thanks man,I really have enjoyed it. Been giving it a lot of attention lately and I am very happy where it is going. If you look at some of the pics earlier in the thread, you wouldn't think it's the same car.

Thanks! And the cool thing is.....it doesn't have a lick of new paint on it. The original paint is still in brilliant condition considering it sat outside in the Highveld heat, cold and thunderstorms for over 3 years, so I am properly chuffed that it's still in such good condition.

My dad has a 61 Volvo which he runs on 95... If I recall correctly he put harder valve stem seals in...

Ah,ok,well the car goes fine on LRP,was just wondering if it could run on ULP. Maybe I'll drain this tank and put in a bit of ULP and see what happens! Nothing ventured nothing gained!

I would think so Anton, there are scratches but that's a given for 32 years old. But it still feels very good under the fingers despite it's exposure to the elements! They obviously sprayed it on THICK in the good old days....listen to me....good old days....:roflol:

You can run Ulp. You valve stems will not be hardened. That only happened in later model years. But the stems have effectively been "treated" by the years of leaded. I posted somewhere before regarding this with more detail on model years. but the short answer is yes you can run normal ulp.

Thanks Steve. Glad to know. Car is smoking quite badly at the moment,not sure why,but it's concerning me. I am going to pull some things apart as soon as I go on leave, don't have the time for it now. Thinking of doing a complete gasket overhaul (except for the head) and doing a proper clean up. I am on leave for three weeks so will have a bit of time to burn,now that the exterior is done. And my windscreen running in label arrived today, so time to get the windscreen replaced :thumbs:

If the car is smoking on start up likely valve stem seals.
If on deceleration definitely valve stem seals
If on acceleration piston rings.

General rule of thumb.

Best to do a compression test and see what the readings look like.

a head job on the M30 is not a challenging task as little can go wrong.

My money is on valves or stem seals.

If you take the head off change rocker shafts and eccentrics and both your car and ears will thank you for it.

I will let Bugger update the thread in more detail about the issues we had today with her.
We basically had to get a new set of ht leads cos the 1 lead was buggered :fencelook: We think the faulty lead is what's causing the rough idle.
She still won't start, we think she's now flooded with fuel cos we tried to start her a lot. We gonna go back in the morning and tow start her.

.... She is smoking a lot when you start her and rev a bit

What colour is the smoke? If it's white it's valve stem seals.

So......I think I have put it down to a bad fuel system. I think the injectors are either blocked or broken. Last Sunday I tried to get the car started but to no avail. I took the incoming fuel feed hose off and cranked the engine, and found a lot of sediment in the fuel. I suspect the fuel tank is badly corroded and filtering rust particles into the fuel injection system,not allowing sufficient fuel to enter the engine. The car is currently sitting at Carbon's house, so I am going to tow it home this weekend and start the task of overhauling the entire fuel system (except the high pressure lines under the car). So everything is coming out that is fuel related. Then the task of either refurbishing or replacing the fuel tank starts, getting the injectors cleaned or replaced and replacing whatever rubber hosing there is left to replace
Failing that as the problem,then the engine will need to be replaced. I am also going to do a complete gasket overhaul,hopefully without the head having to come off. I do,however,believe it to be a fault with fuel delivery and the dodgy HT lead I found last week.

Ok,so been a while since I last updated this.Reason,car has been on jack stands for a couple of months while I try and get a new petrol tank. I decided it wasn't worth my while trying to fix the old one as I just don't have the energy for it right now.
So unfortunately the car is just sitting collecting lots of dust and cobwebs at the moment,and no doubt some BIG spiders!
Hoping to start putting some stuff back together next week,as the injectors are still out and the valve cover still off,so might be time to get re-energised into doing something.
