Do these have crank sensors? I believe so. Check that if you haven't already.

+1

Check the crank sensor..

Mine was caked in dirt when I first got it..
It should be in front, under the distributor, looks like a metal labello (if that makes sense) with a wire attached and a screw holding it on.

Would I be able to get to it from underneath the car,or from the top?

From the top should be easy enough.. unless u really want to go under the car

Just remove the airbox, plenty of space then.

Ok so after much faffing I still don't know why this car won't start. I just wanted to confirm something, below is an image of what I think is the crankshaft position sensor, can anyone please confirm that this is indeed the sensor??

Thanks! Just wanted to make sure! It will be getting checked shortly, also the distribution cap and probably replace the fuel pump and the fuel filter as a matter of course.

Just check that that the wire goes somewhere. On my engine (slightly different to yours) that is an un-used sensor that is there for diagnostics. The crank position sensor is on the bell housing and there are two plugs next to each other toward the back of the cam cover.

I searched in vain for my trouble shooting guide. I will look around the net again for you.

Something just occurred to me. Check your exhaust and make sure that you don't have heat damage to wires because of the new exhaust... it is puzzling me that suddenly it doesn't run when essentially all that changes was the exhaust.

Success!! So on Saturday I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump, pulled the level sensor out of the tank and discovered a small blockage, did some tests, bought a battery charger and then gave up. Had a crack at cleaning the crankshaft position sensor,it was all gummed up. Then yesterday I decided to have one more crack at it after charging the battery. After much turning of the key,the old girl roared into life. Rough idle issue a thing of the past. Also discovered that I don't have a dogleg gearbox :thumbdo: which I was most disappointed about. So my sluggish pull off in first was actually me pulling off in second. However, the good news is that the car has a silky smooth 5 speed gearbox. Took her for a drive,a worthwhile drive, and I was amazed at how good the drive is,despite the fact that the back is very happy indeed! But finally I made some serious progress. Very happy indeed!!:joy:

Thanks Tareeq, I am well chuffed now! Glad it wasn't something monumental that was the problem! Now just to sort out one or two other little niggles and I should be good to go!

10 points to you for sticking with it and not giving up.

Thanks! I actually just about gave up on Saturday when the battery died again....I told my wife I was going to start selling the car off for parts....lol

Be glad you do not have the dogleg gearbox. I had a E28 535i with that box and was always worried i would pull away in reverse. Fortunately i never did but the guy i sold it to did (him or his wife, cannot remember who) but he or she drove into the back wall of the garage! I never liked that gearbox and never will!

Hahahaha!! Yeah like James May with the Cosworth Merc in that episode of Top Gear. It's not a deal breaker if I am honest. I had it in my 333i and it wasn't the be all and end all, suppose it's just around the rarity of the box that makes it appealing. That being said, I did feel a bit doff when I suddenly discovered that first was where it would be normally, and why the car was so sluggish in what I thought was first....hahahaha!! But the one thing that caught me out was how quickly the back tyres light up when you do pull off, going to have to be ultra careful in the wet, seeing as though the only traction control I have is under my right foot!!

So......she's up to her tricks again. Took her out on Saturday and she was going beautifully. Took a mate for a spin and she was strong, good on pull off etc. and just all in all brilliant. Then on Saturday afternoon myself and Carbon and a mate went for a drive. She kept cutting out on pull off, or she would be fine and then die,but would start up just perfectly. Then when she got going, she would twerk (hahahahahaha!) and then die, even if trying to keep the revs up. Managed to get the car home after being pushed into a parking spot, then went and got some stuff, came back, and she started fine again. Then the whole dying thing happened again. Sunday morning, started the car,no issues, pulled it out of the garage to reverse it in,no issues, parked, faffed a bit and then when trying to reverse the car more,it just wouldn't start.I am not sure but I am beginning to think there is a problem with the fuel injectors due to the non-start issue (and everything in the fuel system bar the tank has been replaced) and the jerkiness when driving. Any thoughts from the esteemed panel? Haven't tried to start the car since lunch time yesterday, the battery has been on trickle charge for a day or so now.
