Guys, if anyone knows how to do a compression test I would appreciate the details, or know what the compression ratios should be. I think you can get the pressure gauge from any Midas, I would like to eliminate the cylinders as the culprit in my rough idle. Gonna be doing some testing during the week based on some feedback from the very helpful guys on the bigcoupe forum.

I think what you do is disconnect all the spark plugs. Then unscrew a spark plug. Screw in the gauge and crank it. You repeat for each cylinder. I did this years ago so cannot quite remember.

That is correct

So the spark plugs in the car are NGK BP5EY plugs. Would those be ok?

Check page 7 of the NGK pdf. It says that the E24 should use BPR5ES plugs, not the ones that are in the car currently....

http://www.ngksparkplugs.co.za/catalogue/NGK Catalogue 2013.pdf

Ok,so BP5EY is used in the following cars:

Daihatsu Rocky 2.0
Toyota Condor 2.4
Toyota Hiace 1.8 (84/85)
Toyota Hiace 2.2 Bus
Toyota Hiace 2.2 Wagon GLX
Toyota Hilux 2.2
Toyota Hilux 2.2 4x4 (85/86)
Toyota Stallion 1.8
Toyota Venture 1.8

Alternative to the BPR5ES is the BP5ES. Could this be the cause of my idle issue???

Feeling VERY frustrated tonight. Went at got new plugs (the correct ones) and installed. But the car is refusing to start again. I put fuel in over the weekend and it started,I gave it a bit of a rev and then it died, and it hasn't started since. Now all that is happening is that it is draining the battery.
I seem to take 5 steps forwards and then 10 steps back. I know I am close to getting it sorted, but it is really really REALLY REALLY starting to frustrate the living crap out of me now,and I am losing my patience.
It swings but will NOT take.I am not sure if there is fuel getting through to the injection system because I can't smell any fuel (which may be a good thing cos then there are surely no leaks....OR......there is something not firing in the high pressure fuel lines) so I guess the next step is to pull the hose off that goes into the injection system, crank the motor and see if fuel comes out....wow that's nice and safe! Anyone got a light?
Seriously though, this is driving me batty at the moment!!!

Maybe look at that fuel filter to see if its blocked. Remember we put the old one back in cos the new one was leaking, when I got fuel in my eye :fencelook:

Morgan, I will come help on the weekend. We can work on both the e24 and Carbon. Need to take off the front bumper of Carbon to get behind it

stupid question,
you sure the fuel pump is fine?
does this car have 1 fuel pump or 2 like some of the models. ?

www.realoem.com <enter vin nr>

theres a fuel pump relay that can also get sticky, if this car stood very

As far as I know it's only got the one fuel pump. Reason I say that is that I have changed all the hosing behind the driver's side wheel where the fuel mechanisms are and only seen the one pump. Also last night I disconnected the incoming fuel line off the injector system and turned the engine and fuel came through. Then I disconnected the return hose on the injection rail and cranked the car and fuel came through there too. That's why I am stumped.

So a bit of background. I went and got some gasoline and dumped it in the tank. As we know, the idle has been a bit rough,so I faffed with leads and the airbox/throttlebody assembly a bit to make sure there were not vacuum leaks. Found one of the plugs wasn't torqued correctly,so tightened it a bit, then cranked the car and it started.
While it was idling I revved the engine to about 4,000rpm,the revs didn't go over 4,000rpm,but the engine then just kinda died. The revs dropped, and the engine cut out and since then it hasn't started. So that's why last night I put the correct plugs in and then checked the fuel coming into the injection system.

I just feel like

I'll check the fuel pump relay as well. But if fuel is coming in, then it should be ok?

Left the keys in the ignition last night, and the driver's door was slightly ajar, battery has completely discharged. That is the third battery on this car in 6 months. Eish.

my monies on ecu and or dme

remove ecu, check for dry joints
go over all relays in fusebox at engine compartment.

a sticky relay wont engage or will be permanently engaged

so just that the fuel is coming out of the fuel line is one thing, how about ignition control.

hold a spark plug lead while someone starts the car, there should be 6 leads, you should shock 6 seperate times.

this will mean there is spark....

Do these have crank sensors? I believe so. Check that if you haven't already.

+1

Check the crank sensor..

Mine was caked in dirt when I first got it..
It should be in front, under the distributor, looks like a metal labello (if that makes sense) with a wire attached and a screw holding it on.
