F80 M3 on top gear

What always made the M3 "special" was that you couldn't get the same engine in a different/lesser model... Now its a case of "one engine for all models" type of thing and only the boost levels change...boring!
Engine wise, there is nothing to set it apart from the humdrum coming out of BMW today. At least the E90/2/3 M3 had a V8 to set it apart from the rest of the 3 series models.

Gizmo I was wondering if you drove the f80 before you make a statement like that.
I am not talking about just going round the block in comfort mode - I mean REALLY driving the car like it was supposed to.
Calling an M car boring - wow.
I think the 335 is a waste of money.
Might as well by a 320 with the sports steering and suspension.
With the twin turbo engine you won't be far off from a 335 at half the price.

Fully agree with Polly, I've driven both the new M3 and M4 and boy oh boy was it boring..... Hell no, it was amazing :blowheart:

The fact that you think the M3 has the same engine with only an adjustment on the boost levels, shows that you are clueless in this debate mate. :thumbdo:

There are SOME similarities between the two engines classes but off the top of my head here are some major differences:

Closed deck block
Larger bore
Shorter stroke
Arc spray cylinder liners
Forged crankshaft
Pistons
Completely different turbo philosophy and design(N55 uses a single twin scroll while the S55 uses twin single scroll)
Better cooling
Revised oil pump and pick-ups better suited for track use

Etc Etc Etc....

To me these changes make it an "M" engine and sets it apart...just because it isn't a V8 doesn't mean it's the same....and I can tell you the car is not boring....it may not be as exciting of a drive as say a Porsche Cayman, but "boring" it is not

+1 on all the plus points of the M4. I, for one, really thought the new M4 was gonna be an unengaging dud, but boy oh boy was I wrong, BMW have taken the "M3" label to a WHOLE new level with this car. I have driven it, both in comfort and I've rung it's neck and wow, it's just mind blowing. Sure you can mod a X35 to open a can of whip a$$ but an M it will never be, and yes I had driven an E9x and F30 335.

Personally, I wouldn't sell my V8 for one, but if the Gods smile on me and I can afford both, I would buy one in a heart beat.

Well done BMW:praise::praise::praise:

Thanks whiteunderarm

Just too add a few thoughts just off my head. The M3 is a car designed from scratch. It shares very little of the f30. In fact the little is only a few cosmetic parts on the interior (like a cig lighter lol). In fact when looking at even the plastic bits in the engine bay, they all have a m logo embedded in them. That's not mentioning all the carbon fibre and aluminum extensively used on the car. There is also a reason why the engine is codenamed s and not n. I'm not gonna get into it as it would take pages to type out. You do the homework.

All I can say is 2 friends that drove my car bought one within 1 week of driving my car.
One is coming from a 1 m and the other was driving a sl500.
I don't think they would have done it if they found it boring and they paid premium cause they could not wait. Go figure.

Like I said drive one. The hair on your back will stand and you won't stop smiling.

Forgot to mention the m3 has 11 inter coolers wonder why gizmo

Look I think it should have had the twin turbo V8 in it as that is where the development/evolution of the M3 was going. Its true I haven't driven one yet and Im sure its very far from boring! My 'boring' statement was the fact they went down in cylinders, to me a 6cyl is a downgrade from a V8. I know its because of the times we in and all about "advertised economy figures" that no-one ever gets but perhaps Im old school and prefer CC's to turbos, but thats just me...

11 intercoolers! Eish, thats like 10 more places to leak from...

I get where you coming from...in a perfect world I would have liked to see a twin turbo V8 as well to be honest.....might get flamed here but that's why I'm looking forward to the new C63....

Now the M6, that is one hell of a monster keeping in mind they shed 2 cylinders and 600cc from it's predecessor. The M3 shed 2 cylinders and 1000cc, quite a big difference if you think about it.

May be a drop in CC and lost 2 cylinders but a HUGE increase in performance.

With the technology in the new M3/4, u still dont lose the feeling that you in a special M car. She is eager to please all the way to the limiter.

Id have one in a heartbeat.

Some news on the c63.
I was called up last week from a merc salesman (I owned 2 63 in the past.)
He offered me one of the first ones coming in April.i asked what what deal is prepared to do and he said he can give me 7% discount. So I said 7% on a car that's not yet even launched.
Now that is telling you something about merc. You can't even get an allocation on an m3 right now. M4 yes but not the m3.
On the merc the mct is really kuk it's an excuse for a sports transmission. Slow as hell. The consumption really sucks and the handling is appalling.
If you ask most people that love driving looking for these type of cars weather they would choose an 09 E9x M3 or an 09 C63 see what they say.
I have seen a few that have less than 50k on the clock and I must say they don't age well you should see how the seats look already.
The new one
I think history will repeat itself.

Singh I don't know weather to laugh or cry when I read some posts.
commenting on a car without driving one
It's like saying the Boeing 747 that was designed in the 70s is better than the a380 because the Boeing has two extra engines.

I think you can compare two cars built 4 years apart, I don't know how comparing two planes built 40 years apart has anything to do with cars...

Correction, the V8 arrived in South year 2007, the F80 year 2014, that's 7 years apart not 4, who was your maths teacher :roflol:
