F80 M3 on top gear

So lets say I take a 07/2013 built e92 M3 and compare it to the 2014 model? Or isn't that allowed?

That would then be less than 2 years apart not 4

Seriously now, the V8 design was finalised back in 2006 the F80 2013.

That's still 7 years apart.....

Hey Singh
Just give your fingers a rest.
Rather use them for more important stuff.
I gave up already

I still think the colour of a g-string is more important than the way the way a car performs.

I haven't drive the new M3/M4 but coming from the owner of a modded E92 335i, in my opinion even the E46 M3 is a much more engaging and thrilling drive than my 335i, let alone the E9X M3.

My 335i is quicker than a stock V8 M but I will be the first to admit that ///M cars are special. When driven well, and to their full potential, it is one of the most rewarding driver experiences you can get.

The boosted 6 Pot ///M will surely live up to its pedigree.

F80 M3 is said to be 4 seconds quicker than E90 M3 around Topgear track.

I owned E92 335i and E93 335i. I ordered 435i Convertible for R950k (with options) and also intended to install M Performance Exhaust and M Power Kit pushing price to R1.0 million.

My car was delayed and I opted for M4 Convertible at R1.35 million. Goodness me, I'm so glad. 335i and 435i are just fast 3/4 Series. M3/4 is an occasion from looks, the engineering, emotion and drive.

IMHO BMW's M division has always been about building the greatest normally aspirated engines out there when all its competitors were using forced induction to get similar power figures, this is what made BMW truly great to me. Its easy to get power out of forced induction, its not easy to get power out of NA, BMW selling out to turbo technology for their normal cars fine I can understand that but M division selling out too, thats just too much for me....They lost alot of respect by going turbo, not only from me but from M fans all over the world...:sorry:

Its fine, the NA M3 models will be around much longer than the "reduced life expectancy" that comes with high pressure turbo cars. Not a problem though as the new M3/4 only needs to last as long as motorplan, after that they tell you its worthless, give you peanuts for it on trade in and sell you the latest model...BMW building cars that last 400-500 000km is no longer good business for them, they have now realised this and now build their cars accordingly...Each generation of 1/3/5/7 series ect is shorter than the last...a pity really.

Gizmo, same as bmw going front wheel drive... nothing we can do about it, and who cares...if the tech works, and bmw knows how to do turbo cars, then fine by me, and any bmw enthusiast.

remember bmw did turbo cars way back when, so I say adapt or die...

I love my normal aspirated bmw, but anyone shooting down the new Model cars just cause it's smaller capacity engine but turbocharged is just being silly

..now to get back to the g-string question... :fencelook:

In the past the e36 m3, e46 m3 had very little competition. Having owned both these variants at the time they were current you knew you had the pinnacle of automotive engineering (barring the super cars of course) ... The e92 had its work cut out for it and whilst not the best performer on a straight line especially at altitude. At red line it sure was a thrill for the senses. Very well built and it was special ... In 2009 (or was it 2010) I recalled test driving a Nissan GT-R with the intention of buying one and I came away thinking the m3 was so much more of an accomplished car than the Nissan knowing very well the Nissan would trounce the M3 on a straight and a track ... The new M3/M4 is a really really good car. It's bloody quick and it's all round good. But it will face some fierce competition. So good that you can use it every day much easier than the generations before it. But it's that perfect almost civil character that takes away the specialness of the car ... I would buy an m3/m4 as an everyday car but not too sure of it as a weekend toy.
(But as an everyday car to me it's a little too rich for my blood)

The prices are beginning to drop and the m4 at under a million will be tempting ...

I agree completely with White, cannot compare.
The M3/4 feels like a completely different car. Honestly, its really difficult to say which I would say is better to drive between the E9X M3 and the M3/4.
I don't like the steering feel of the M4 and M6 at all.

I was really disappointed with that review of the M4 on Top Gear.
Its as if they put it in that video just to show the difference between old BMW technology and new.

Oh and Will Smith is a flippen legend!!! :praise:

lets wait till fifth gear review it, then we'll get a proper review, from race drivers....Jezza loves Mercedes, wait till he reviews the new C63, he gonna love it

There are some proper drivers reviews of M3/4 by Chris Harris, Autocar, AutoExpress and Motor Trend.

Coisman, BMW did one turbo car, the 2002 turbo, back then turbos were crap and terribly laggy so they went back to NA and perfected it. Turbo technology has come a long way since then and they don't suffer the lag they once did. Turbo cars do have flatter and broader torque curves which makes them better daily drivers and I can understand the need for it, Im just sad to see the greatest engine manufacturer of NA engines (M division) say no more NA engines will be built...
I have always been a sucker for a well built robust NA engine, its hard to change my views about it.

You should rather become more involved in the AMG scene:

1. You love NA, V8 motors
2. You tend to think that ///M cars are all motor and nothing else

The point is that times change - this is true for all motoring marques. Then also, your opinion is very narrow-minded, essentially since you tend to forget the sorcery that goes into the suspension, weight distribution, steering and handling of an M car.

Having driven every M fettled 3 series since the 333i until the E92, I'd say that each 3 series M car is more a revolution than an evolution. Meaning that each car is completely different from the previous. As opposed to a Subaru that just 'evolves' between generations.

In closing, yes we all have our opinions on what we like, and where we envision M cars to be in our own minds, but we also have to keep in mind that cars also change with mindsets. If we just sort to improve rather than invent, where would the world be?
