F30 320d power upgrade

Unfortunately the dealers are clever scums - they know you don't have a choice if you want to keep your maintenance plan intact. At the moment these cars are fairly new and until such time they start coming off MP, the dealers can charge whatever they want. :nonono:

I raced a 120d coupe recently, on William Nicol, he said he had the dealer performance upgrade done on his ride... He did stick at my front wheel in first and 2nd gear... This upgrade is good, well except the price :argh:

Looks really good. Depending on the price. Knowing BMW it's going to be something like R10 000 or R15 000.

In that case spend R4000 on a remap and get more impressive gains. :rollsmile:

Who do you think can do F30 software updates?

Petri has sent me a PM asking specific questions which I deem interesting enough to publish in the open forum:

Questions:

1. Is it true that due to problems accessing the unique IP address or something of each F30 ECU it is not yet possible to do any work software wise? If this is true it would be appreciate if you can elaborate on why if you have any further details.

What you call unique IP is actually called a seed key
Certain ECU prior to F series cars and from Fseries onward ALL ECU have been locked (sometimes double and even tripple) so that aftermarket "tuners" can not easily flash these ECU
The current seed key for F series ECU is not public.
In other words not many (and I really mean only a hand full) people can actually software tune F series cars

2. What is you take on the BMW M Performance Power Kit dealer installed kit? They say it includes both software and hardware (bigger intercooler?)?

BMW supplies a brandnew ECU with the PPK it's unique and VIN related.
Hardware consists of ECU, bigger intercooler, bigger air vent and different air ducts

3. Probably you would not have encountered any F30s so far let alone any with the BMW M Performance Power Kit installed. But I think this is much the same as the same upgrade that can be done on the e90 320d. Since the engine are almost the same except for the twinscroll technology.

But anyway. If you have worked on a E90 320d with this upgrade, has your upgrades been able to bring even more power out of the 320d. Ie piggy back on the dealer update (which includes hardware). In other words would E90 320d with BMW M Performance Power Kit and Promotec work be > E90 320d with Promotec work only

It is virtually the same PPK as for the E90 (model and engine related of course). ECU is completely different with new security features

BMW PPK is still a conservative improvement and Promotec Performance software with DP is still ahead in terms of torque and power gains.

But will Promotec Performance software with DP get bigger gains if BMW PPK was first installed? Ie:

F30 320d + BMW PPK + Promotec Performance software with DP

vs

F30 320d + Promotec Performance software with DP

The two should be fairly equal
Bigger Intercoolers do improve power in hot conditions and so do air ducts

Same or virtually same power in Winter!

In other words..... PPK are just to please MP!

Biggest slices of the cake cost wise are the ECU, the Intercooler and the stronger vent motor

Take the ECU away and your PPK will only cost around R8k

BTW .... in early 2013 Promotec will launch our new Peformance Box (an additional ECU) especially developped for F series Diesels!

This Promotec Performance Box will not act just like any linear operating piggyback box on the market but will have our especially developped performance maps in its memory!

It's just like having our Performance Software in the ECU, yet its MP proof and removable at any time!
All cables / looms are manufactured in OEM quality!

The BMW M Performance Power Kit = R16509 + VAT + 1.5 hours labour

BMW M Performance exhaust pipe finisher in chrome = R4193 + VAT

Some other chrome exhaust tip not sure what it looks like = R722 + VAT

Sport Trim floor mats (red stitching) = R1108 (Front) + R717 (Rear) +VAT
