Go to Wurth and ask for their fabric tape.

If no Wurth near you let me know and when I am next there will get you a few rolls and courier to you

You will need fabric tape to keep the loom supple and easy to route

Hi Peter,  thanks for a legendary offer. I'm based in Bellville and work on the road so it shouldn't be a problem to get to worth or BMW.

Autozone also sells the fabric tap I purchased a roll from there earlier this year.

Shotalot bud.

Hi gents,

I decided to test fit the loom today and connect up all the plugs that link up with the rear fuse box and towards the battery just to see what happens with the ignition on. It's a pretty straightforward exercise however, I'm not too sure of what I'm missing in the fusebox I.e. relays, connectors etc.

I'm hopeful that one of the fanatics might have a sample of the rear fusebox so that I can see what I'm missing.

Fuel pump cant be heard upon swinging so I'm sure that's gone.

See picture below

I'll try autozone tomorrow for the material tape. I just want to hear the 5er purrrrr to get the adrenalin going.

Hi guys, so I think I identified why my car is not starting. The suspect the fuel pump to be ceased. I completely removed it and gave it 12V and all it does is make a tick sound as if it is stuck/ceased. The tank definitely has some rust inside, the fuel does not smell as it should (possibly gone bad).

Goldwagen has a fuel pump for around R950. Are there any other options available or ones I should stay clear from?

Definitely sounds to be a ceased fuel pump.

Did you come right with that material tape? I am based in Milnerton and have quite a bit of it just laying around. Let me know if you need still.

Keep the pics and updates rolling in!

Thanks bud. I got a roll from worth at R180ea. That was all they had. I'll definitely need more. Do let me know if you're parting...

Hi Benji, no stress at all. My fault though as I was supposed to message you.

Hi Gents, so following the removal of the fuel pump and also pumping out the old fuel, I found alot of surface rust inside and also sediment as per pics below.

I'm wondering now what's the best way forward... Remove tank and send for acid bath - issue with this is that I work alone and foresee a struggle with the fuel filler pipe.

Or

Attempts to clean it inside without removal but how...
My thoughts here was to Jack the car up quite high from the passenger side and then rinse in the hope that all sediment falls towards the opening where I can then pump out and pick up the sediment. Not sure if a vacuum might work here with extra extension.

Thoughts?

Hi guys,

Removed the tank today. Toying with the idea of replacing with a second hand unit that I can get for R650 or acid bathing min for around the same price. Also collecting all the interior relays and related plug ins for R350 from the same guy.

The issue with acid bathing option
I'm scared that once they do this, further floors will come up and incur higher repair rates. From outside it looks to be in decent condition however, inside has layers of soot, rust particles and whatever else lives in there.

The pros to collecting the replacement unit is that I get to fit it on the same day which means I get to test by late friday or early Saturday.

Nice build man! Been following your progress.

If the replacement tank is clean and untarnished inside, I'd go with that.

Hi guys,

Collected my second hand fuel tank today. It came out of a car that was driving not too long ago and the condition is very good with lovely green fuel inside. Also collected all of the creature comfort relays that fits on the fuse box under the passenger seat.

Just need to get a replacement pipe for the (breather)pipe I cut and a fuel filter and then reassemble. Also drain the fuel supply in the engine bay to get rid of the old fuel.

I'm really optimistic that this will solve my no start problems.

Hi guys, so I fitted the replacement fuel tank and new fuel pump on Saturday. Mind you, what a crappy job it is getting the tension on the straps/cradle that holds the tank in place.

Upon turning the ignition, I still hear no priming from the fuel pump. For the sake of trying to figure out if the motor is ok, i just gave the fuel pump 12v and attempted to start as is. Turns out, the engine goes. It has a bad miss as if firing on 5 cylinders or so. I think the direct connection made it over fuel a little. The new plugs were quite wet when I checked them. I suspect the misfire to be due to a suspect plug lead on cylinder 4 IIRC as when I pulled them individually, I could notice an immediate change in idle on the other cylinders and not with C4.

Furthermore, my OEM radio/CD was removed by previous owner due to immobilizer issues and was replaced with an aftermarket alarm. With my fuel pump not receiving 12v at the plug, I suspect it may be due to a signal not being received from the alarm. Keep in mind I replaced the loom. Relay checked and fuse checked while swinging and both show 12V.

Any suggestions?
Where can I find plug leads? Are they the same like any other E34?

Great work bud and at least some progress.
Don't forget to drop me a message on the details I left via PM, I found that tape, hopefully it can be of use to you.

Definitely bud. At the moment I'm just trying to iron out this problem. Realistically, I will probably only attend to the loom and neatening thereof next month after I move. Just anxious to drive it there. Not nice towing a M5?

Otherwise rent a trailer.
Or we can try and coincide this with when I need to deliver my e30 to the mech seeing as I'll be renting a trailer for that, we take the M5 same time.

I think its like R410 to rent a trailer, I rented from a trailer hire based near Paarden Eiland and they are open on a Sunday

Great to see you got it running! Misfiring on these can be any number of issues. The plug leads are M5 specific and are really expensive for a set. Im sure you could make your own with the right tools and patience, but first make sure that the spark lead is the culprit. Do you have the correct spark plugs? They are quite an unusual type and hard to find - Bosch Y6DC. Open up the distributor cap and check for wear. Clean with emery paper or replace - cap is R650 for Bremi at GW, rotor is about R150.

These motors are also notorious for vacuum leaks which can cause any number of issues. Positive pressure smoke test or soapy bubble test is your friend here. I would probably start with the vacuum system.

Failing that, balance the throttle bodies and make sure each cylinder is seeing equal vacuum at idle (when hot)
