There is no immediate replacement plan, unfortunately @Nick.

The sale price was no where near the settlement amount I had to pay. :hammerhead:

I have all the gear and a brand new helmet, I am sure the itch will get the better of me. Once there I will decide what I want.

So to keep life interesting, the e46 now has a noise when on throttle in 2nd, 3rd and 4th at round 3000rpm and up but not in 1st and 5th. As soon I lift off the throttle the noise is gone. I reckon it's gearbox/dmf/clutch, this where the noise coming from, also can't hear it with the window down.

Any ideas or advice?

Turn off radio and AC then record us a video so we can hear the sound you have.

I hope its something as simple as DMF or so, but because you say you only hear it in 2,3 and 4 it could be something inside the gearbox. Certain gears inside the box will box will be shared by the eventual 2,3 and 4 gears, depending on the gearbox. I am no expert on the 325 5speed but I assume it is a similar concept. Like 1st and reverse should share some gears, with reverse having 1 extra to change the direction on the output side.

Best to get it checked asap before you cause more damage.

Tried a video, you can't hear it. It is to faint and has slightly frequency chance over the engine noise.

My mate also mentioned the gear "setup", I will read up a bit this weekend on the 5 speed box.

The dmf has not been changed during my ownership and I am unsure if it was done before. My money is on the dmf.

Thanks Pete you advise is always so "sound"

@Riaad, super fine grinding noise. No vibrations either, the sound comes on smoothly and then disappears when I lift the throttle.

I changed out the the gearbox oil yesterday, the whine is still present. Also managed to find a few links on the interwebs, where okes report the same problem. Conclusion is the gearbox needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

Who would you guys suggest I use for a rebuild in the Cape Town area?

If you want serious heartache, get the box rebuilt.
There is simply no one in SA that can actually do it correctly. Many will claim they can, but its never 100% afterwards.

My advice - drive it as is until it explodes, then get another secondhand one

I don't want make a meal of it. The MX5 will be car with which I will try things.

For the 46 straight replacement and keep it going.

I am kinda on the same page as @Fordkoppie

My e36 also gave gearbox issues and we just replaced the box.

Cool pics at the airport...seriously need to figure out how to capture mine on 'film' looking as good as she does in real life - especially after a bath.
