Moving along at a steady pace.

We have just finished the head and cam assembly and Crash will be posting a new clip in a few days.

We now need to install vanos and peripherals and we are almost ready to mate gearbox and engine.

Will post pics in the morning

Should be ready by Sunday to go into the car all things being equal.

Scratch Sunday engine placement and hope for after Christmas sometime as we need 2 8mmX1.0 (fine thread)fillister head screws (cap screws) and the bolt suppliers seem to be closed for the holidays.

Unless of course I can locate them sooner.....as in now.

Any thoughts?

Epic build by what seems to be an epic builder, very very nice work A1exander.

I hope this is a business and not a hobby but either way, if you were planning on keeping it small I think Crash just blew that out of the water cos now you are going to have BMW Fanatics lining up outside your gate for you to work on their cars:praise:

Thank you for your kind words.

Gratefully that it is merely a hobby and I can lavish attention on what I believe is an iconic engine

Don't tell me you don't have some Toyota bolts and some silicone left to finish the job. You can always just use silicone to "glue" the parts back together. Come now, use some initiative.

A few pics from last night

Head on and unsecured. The wire is supporting the cam chain from dropping in the motor.

Man in blue overalls waiting 20 minutes between tightening of teh head.

The head was tightened in 4 steps to ARP specifications.

Man in blue overalls tightening the camshaft caps whilst being interfered with by man holding camera.

This is what it looked like this morning without the man in the blue overalls and the man holding the camera interfering.

I thought it best to name the man in blue overalls; Alexander my son aka Lysis
and the man holding the camera; Chris aka Crash Nemesis

A few random pics from the build.

The timing cover gaskets as well as the invoice for them.

Vac M/sport gear and internals for higher flow

Timing cover settled on the most expensive gaskets one can get

Correct oil sump gasket notice that we have only used silicone on it where it meets the rear main oil seal housing and the timing chain cover with no other silicone applied.

Sump on and only torque tightened to 10Nm as per factory spec.

We stripped the throttles and gave them a good clean.
Here is a pic of them with the first one almost clean but not clean enough.

One of the things we noticed is the lack of needle bearings on the throttles as found on the M88/S38/S50 motors.
The S54 uses 3 needle bearings and all the others 6
Clearly BMW are cutting corners so would hate to think what they are doing on the new cars

Actually it is the 6th throttle but why split hairs

Just wanted to remind everyone how pretty a BMW engine looks.

Some curves to die for

Vanos unit on
New seals and rattle kit done.

So Sunday has come and gone and we are still no further than the middle of the floor.
Monday I will hunt down the 2 illusive bolts and try and complete the assembly as I am advised that with Christmas Eve on Tuesday I dare not step into my garage.........and in my house I am the BOSS and my wife has said it is ok for me to say so.

So after Christmas we shall continue to try and complete the build.

We still need to tidy up the engine compartment a bit and as soon as that is done we shall attempt to do the insertion.
