Hi Griffen

I know our repair team uses a grey primer, mostly because it is a flexi primer which also fills.

From the factory I am not too sure, obviously in the case of this M5 a white primer was used but the paint on the front of this car is not OEM.

All those stone chips is normal for an older car. Not that much one can do about it. I think my 540 looks even worse :mmm:

I could never drive a car that looked like that. I would need to fix it.
I struggle to drive my cars when they not clean.

My problem is that the bad paint is not just on the front. So have decided it's better to save up and have the rust fixed at the back and then have whole car resprayed so no blending is needed. Now if only the prices of everything else would stop going up 20x faster than my yearly increase I might actually get to do this.

Just by the way, no blending is required these days... The colour matches are near to 100% perfect as its all computerized.

That is always struggle :(, and spraypainting doesnt normally come cheap, and rightly so its a Sh1t load of work if done properly.

I am also very weary when it comes to paint work.
Are u in CT?

If done properly by absolute professionals :). On my Super Boss I spent 12k respraying the car and it was an absolute fk up.
But we got magic mike now :)

In fact, just for those following I just got a call from our Repair Team.

The process is very simple, they input the paint code into a computer and it gives them the mixing procedure. They then spray a test sample and check the colour against the car - This is usually never correct so then they use a card system which has over 10 shades per colour which is then compared to the car. Whichever shade is best is then inputted onto the computer and the original OEM colour is "adjusted" to the specifics of that individual car. The mixing pattern is then saved to that car.

Now usually with a red car there is always paint fade, and usually it goes lighter - Not today! The OEM paint colour is lighter than the paint on the car and the bonnet, bumper and fender is even darker than all of that. The problem this presents is that the shade of the car is darker than the shades they have available.

So, the spraywork has been delayed as the BASF rep has had to come out tomorrow to mix a special colour to match the front of the car with the rear. If you want to see attention to detail you need to see this man do his work... He matched an Opel Astra a few weeks ago where he had to blend and re-blend the paint at least 12 times before finally handing over the new colour pattern - Serious skill involved here!

No train smash, I must admit I am surprised this car is darker but then Andre (our team manager) says weirder things have happened.

Delivery for Saturday.

Yes. The other issue I have is that some of the clear coat has started to fail on the roof and I believe it's from blending as you can clearly see a difference in the blue colour from inside of where clear coat is failing to the other side. Decided that it will be a full respray or it won't be worth it, at least no for me.

Paint work is one of those things that doesn'nt make any difference to how a car goes... when it is perfect you can look past it at the linees and shapes... but I can tell you every knick and imperfection on all my cars... and I see that, curse and then only look at the gorgeous lines.

looking forward to the end result

Yes, but then that M Coupe does have the most gorgeous body lines! Never have I ever wanted to take a Rotary Polisher to a car like I did this morning!

which exhaust system is on there?
mine isnt that quiet inside and outside when cruising sounds like a Helicopter.

This M5 should look hot with the front sorted out :)

It has the Rob Green exhaust. I am impressed with it. I only makes enough sound to hear in the car when you give it some boot. The Acs exhaust I have on the Mcoupe drones at cruizing. Luckily the coupe doesn't cruize very often.

I have the same problem I know where every little imperfection is. And I always wash and polish my own cars. First time I washed the M5 I was like o no, o no, no hehehe, mostly paint less dent removal jobs

Hi no I dont
I think there are 2 M5s there right now, a dark blue one and a silverstone one?

For mechanical stuff my car only goes to APS and my own garage.

I must say mine does drone a bit at cruising but its so addictive.
In a very short time I have become absolutely addicted to my M5.

I agree, save them pennies for a complete respray. I have seen some cars that look really good after some paint work (including my Super Boss) then a year later its like "OMG!!!!", peeling, cracking etc :(

Not wanting to derail Clownshoe's thread, but yes, will be there on Sunday. Might only be the E36 though, but I haven't made up my mind. Had the M5 since Feb.
