635 CSI - Restoring one - a blog.

I sourced a secondhand suspension front and rear from an e28 535 to replace on the e24.

Rick has supplied all the front suspension arms new from Meyle(HD) and moranor is supplying all the polly bushes (front and rear).
Suspension arm are at the engineers for the bushes to be pressed out and will be collecting them on Monday and will then await the polly bushes which are on their way in from customs hopefully on Tuesday.

Rick has also sourced e34 M5 brake calipers so we are fitting an M5 brake setup with new discs.

You can see the original red paint in the wheel wells.
At some stage someone sprayed black stone chip in the belief that it looked better.
I am not convinced so I stripped it back to original and will touch up the areas in which the red has worn away.

This is an English car and I now have a deeper appreciation as to why the English boards have posts about rust blaster, heating bolts and soaking bolts prior to loosening them.
The salt that they use on their roads really attacks the metal and corrodes it solid.
I will have to change every single nut and bolt on the suspension.

The brake disc backing plates are wafer thin after having been exposed to numerous salt baths.
The struts are dimpled from rust.

Rick wants poly bushes fitted on the new suspension arms so I will check all welds on the car mounting points and will reinforce any that look suspect.

A slight modification made in SA I suspect.
The strut is held onto the lower suspension by 3 bolts which thread into the bottom of the strut.
Clearly the threads must have stripped and the strut was drilled to accept a longer bolt and nut.

If this is going to be a road car then I would consider rubber bushes, if its going to be a track car then poly bushes. Poly bushes on a road car are too unforgiving, you need that rubber to reduce road noise and make the car a comfortable ride, also the rubber stops vibrations were the poly bush just transfers the vibrations over to the next part its bolted to.

Just my 2c.

Stripped the front cross member of the car as it is kinked where the lower control arm sits.
I needed some more cleaning work so I stripped the steering box and pipes and gave them a good clean and a fresh coat of black Hammerite.

I placed the thrust arm in its position to verify the placement of a washer which is against the bush.

Here is a pic of all the old front suspension components which are being junked.
If anyone has use of e28 front calipers and discs with new pads give me a shout and I shall speak to Rick, even better pm Rick.

This is the replacement cross member from an e28 535.

All new parts with the bushes pressed out and polly bushes fitted.

Front almost ready.
Waiting for anti roll bar to come back from powder coating as well as the M5 front calipers which are being ceramic coated along with the rears.

For those wondering I have cut the brake backing plates off as the new discs are very large and extend beyond the backing plate.
The small piece that I have left behind is so as to protect the ABS sensor

Installed new fuel tank as the one in the car had a leak at 75% fill.

Old tank.

Brake calipers were ceramic coated and rebuilt.

The front suspension is now complete with the addition of a silver (to match the rear) anti roll bar /sway bar/
Still need to bleed brakes but will hold untill I do the rear suspension overhaul.

FOLGAR wheels imported at a considerable cost.
Love the way the brakes fill the rim.

this should be in the nsw section as it is porn :praise:

Thank you for your support.

It really needs a devoted owner and this shark has one.

I am told that there are parts coming in from the USA.
He has brought parts back from England.

The rear anti roll bar/sway bar came from Australia so Rick seems to be the man to go to for parts on these cars as by now he must pretty much know where most things are to be found.

 I believe that some of the parts are shared with the E30 platform

E12 and E28 only unless you consider indicator /wiper/speed control stalks.

Very little from the e30 in them really

Its looking good, will pay off after all the hard work. See you like going my route too. Start with just "Im only going to do bushes" and end up stripping the whole car!!

But its the only way too do it!
