These engines weren't "modified" as in turbo-charged from being a small NA engine to begin with, the engine was designed with the output range, and this is the 320i which as far as I know, has the same basic block design as the more powerful 328i, so the internals and overall design is supposed to be well within the ability to handle the power and stresses. Remember, capacity doesn't automatically translate into engine strength...

Wife drives a 2013 320i manual Sport. Noticed one morning that cars smokes at startup. Took video and showed to BMW. First they said it was normal...then left the car with them. They concluded it was the turbo. Replaced after only 30 000km. Also hear noise in morning like fanblade touching and then it disappears. They tell me it is the petrol pump that does it and it quiets down when warming up. Car now has only 42 000km on clock.
Also has problem with right passenger side door lock. Does not lock or if locked does not open. They are replacing the lock next week. Shocks changed last week. Left wheel bearing changed as well. Clutch has a slight shudder but they report that it is not worn or faulty. Car also went it once when BMW recalled the F30 for one or other reason. Was planning to buy car from wife in February 2016 but will pass. Will rather trade it for another BMW. And continue driving my 325iS - Gusheshe. (Big smile)
Any suggestions? Was impressed with the automatic 320. Much more responsive....But 320 too slow in my opinion.
