Happy for you that your vehicle is under motorplan and everything is getting replaced. Must say this is becoming a norm for BMW in my families experience. My mother's old 318i f/l E46 Automatic had the same problem as did my brother's old BMW 320i E90 pre facelift Automatic. Luckily they both were under motorplan and it happened at 60k km and 80k km respectively. :smashScreen:

Really so we don't have just poor resale value to worry about. Now this and a few other things like shock towers bending.

I've sold my BMW now. I bought a Fortuner D4D now I just need to worry if they will steal it and when I'll do the next 4x4 trip.....

Ha ha ha ha that's a good one. I've at least made sure I bought the most recent model which has the upgraded suspension. Luckily this is not my first 4x4 and I have an Isuzu to do the hectic stuff....

LOL, if it's not one thing to worry about, it's another! Yep, the Fortuners seem to struggle to remain upright. But to be honest, I know of quite a few that for years now have been quite capable of staying upright, so it makes me wonder - it's probably not as bad as it's being made out to be. And the same when it comes to theft. Well, okay now that I think of it, a distant family member bought one and within 2 or 3 weeks of owning it, it was stolen...

Enjoy the D4D though!!

Apollo, do you have manual or auto transmission? Have you received your car and is it any better?

Cheers,

if its got a turbo it will break at some point...you are pushing the same power out a 4 pot that a 6 pot makes. my 2c

I have a few cars some N/A and one turbo and the turbo is going as soon as te MP is gone.

i disagree with that statement. It is a more efficient engine. its not like having a Opel TS & boosting the shit out of it.

boost is boost, you are forcing air into the motor putting strain on everything...

i would be more concerned that its an undersquare engine. also fuel quality & pinging.
but lets agree to disagree. i had a old ford rs turbo & you cannot compare the two! with the direct injection & vanos..even the turbo...two different worlds..that rod angle would be my only worry & pinging as i said but even the ecu should pull it back immediately.

also don't thing the std turbo puts any excessive pressure on the motor, it's been tested and developed, if you increase boost or add performance enhancing products different stories, although im sure it can safely handle some mods safely...i'm no expert as to what the motor is capable of doing reliably.

but imo turbo cars are just expenses waiting to come, either turbo, actuators, boost pipes, intercooler...

that's why I don't want to go turbo again, by Astra has been kicking me in the balls ever since I owned it...granted it has some mods.

330i FTW all the way baby.

PS: very glad your car is sorted, hope you enjoy the SH!T outa her

been there done that mine was detected before the rod could come out from the block. I heard loud clunking and took to dealer. I am not complaining mine was a Rosslyn special but now going like a boeing after new bottom end, turbo and diff ;) I think the guys at the stealership hammered it at the last service cos the techy asked if it is a 328. They like f'ing with my car cos it manual. Plus side when my car went in they gave me a 335 courtesy car.

So here's a breakdown of the history of my car. I'll try to keep it short.

I bought the car from Jeep in boksburg, The previous owner traded the car for a jeep wrangler. I saw the car online while browsing on carfind. I alway wanted a BMW and this one was in good shape.

So the one day I went thru to look at the car and one of the salesmen got the keys for me to check. The interior an all is in excellent condition. The I started the car and naturally the rev a bit higher on cold startup etc. But as soon as the revs cam down to normal I noticed a clucking sound, I told the salesman the car must have been tuned before and I walked out disappointed.
Then I noticed that BMW is right next door so I popped in the ask if this is normal. They informed me that this is normal and this is the injectors making the noise. (I dont think that we where on the same level as to what noise I was talking about.) So I walk back to the jeep dealer and asked to check the car again. Then I started the car and the noise was gone. I take it its because the engine heated up. So long story short I bought the car. Just to be clear. I've driven a lot of car in my life, but this is what I expected from BMW. The ride is just awesome.

Since then every morning I get a loud noise and I was surprised that injector could make such a noise. Drive for 10Km and the car is silent.'
2 weeks ago I went to Welkom and I pushed the car a bit on the highway. But not like a crazy person wanting to break a car. The car was fine. On the monday back in joburg drving home after work I was taking the michelle offramp into alberton and bammmmmm. rod thru block.

After very good service and another bmw f30 to drive while they fix my car, that when I noticed the following.

1. the rental f30 pulls much stonger than my car.
2. on cold start up, the engine is very very very very silent. There is a slight injector noise, but cant compare that to my f30.

So yes, piston slap is the issue. The workshop manager from bmw alberante explained the following.
Piston slap can be heard very clearly on a cold startup and as the engine heats up the piston would expand a little and then sits a little bit tighter in the "sleeve/chamber" That way the noise would go away after the car heats up.

So fellow beemers, here is my advise to you.

1.If you hear a sound and deep inside you know that something is wrong then take your ride in for a check up. Piston slab is def a problem in some bmw's as the X5 next to mine in the workshop just had an engine replacement because of piston slap.

2. if you are still not convinced, go to a dealership and have them start a f30 on the floor and listen if your car make the same or worse noise.
I did this today at alberante and they started a new f30 320i and the car is dead silent.

Thank for all the support and good luck to those of you with possibly the same issue.

I still love my car a lot.:=):

oh yeah, I forgot. the new engine will be here on wednesday and should have the car back next week.

I understand how you feel my brother i just bought a 2012 BMW 320i F30 motorsport from Bedfordview BMW on the 01-11-2015 with 97 000km drove it only 3 days when every morning when i was starting the car it would smoke and the engine would make soo much noise i took it back to the dealer, they said it must be one piston head, they changed ,but it did not solve the problem the noise and smoke, now they have ordered a Turbo as they suspect it could be that. They have given me a 2015 model bmw 320i F30 motorsport while they fix my car,it does not make such a bad nosie or smoke in the morning when i start it.

I think soon as the car is out of motor plan i must extent it with their monthly option that they have offered were you pay around R394 just to be safe

I have been a VW GTI driver since------- this is my first BMW i must say am not happy at all

boost is boost, you are forcing air into the motor putting strain on everything...

Remember the engine is precision engineered to handle the boost pressure generated.
It is designed for this. So its not like taking the engine, slapping mods on it and then having it break, the engine is designed for the stresses and strains placed on it from increased boost pressure.

Infact, with BMW even offering Schnitzer kits, PPK kits etc, it tells you that the engines CAN handle more than the stock numbers dictate.

Most manufacturers are going for smaller engines with superchargers, turbos etc. It is the way of the future as long as we use fossil fuel. Once the world ditches petrol and diesel engines and we go electric, we will drive a car that has an engine the size of a battery that produces probably more power.

just something to think about.....
