So I didn't manage to get a photo of the car.. yet.. I will work my way through old photo albums over the weekend at my folks' place.

From what I can understand, the engine was taken out, and new oil rings ordered from overseas, but on delivery, one of them was broken.

Now I am playing with the idea of dropping the old motor and just replacing it with a running unit from an old 520. On the one end, I want to see if I can squeeze a 2,8 engine in there, but on the other hand I would like to keep it as original as possible. I know it has two Stromberg sidedraughts on, but these were messing us around back then already, so I think it;s time for two new Webers.

I suspect I will find a host of problems, as this car has been in storage now for at least 8 or 9 years.

I did some reading up on this car last night. It was first launched in 1965 with around 120bhp coming from a 4 pot 1990cc engine, mated with a manual gearbox. They also had a less powerful 2.0 C with auto box, but this was not very successfull.

It's big talking point was the slanted, wrap around headlights incorporating the indicators.

We bought ours in the late 80's from Paarlberg BMW, and started the respray operating towards 88/89. The car was stored in a garage and from there, it went into storage in the barn.

Hmm, what to expect..

If I were you, I would sort out garage space, and organise maybe bi-weekly work days, where guys from the forum etc can come and help.

Strip that car down to a shell, then clean and repair everything as it gets put back together. many hands make lights work :)

That is probably where we'll end up. Somehow I don't think my garage will cut it. I will have to start looking around for some sort of open workshop to rent.

Make sure it has a bar and a chill lounge for all of us :)

Joh, not so sure about this. Did my budget this weekend for this project.
At this stage, I won't be able to respray just yet. (This was done already). The motor needs to be assembled/ other repairs done. Pistons, rings and all machining have been done. The brakes all round, clutch, interior, new tyres, endless odds and ends etc.

And my budget is R 30 000,00.

R30k sounds a lot, but it can dry up quickly if you don't know exactly what you're working with. What else, besides the engine and interior needs some tlc?

There are many hands to help you man. R30k is a nice budget to work with, start making a list of everything that will need to be done.

Not sure Hellas, of course the brakes, clutch, probably some electrical work. The rear window needs a new rubber, and I would guess rubbers all round.

30k will get me pretty far. I should get it ready for the road with that type of money.

One guestion that I need to pose the traffic department:
This car is still registered, but I don't think it had a license for the last 10 years.

What to do? Any of you know?

Rebuild registration can take 6 months up to 2 years. Try to organize a deal with a local cop if you know one.

I would like to replace the headlights with the original units as well, but that's going to blow the budget by a mile. Those lights will have to stay on for now.

 I would give my left nut! Bro, just some suggestions: Try the VW beetle restoration shops, where you could get universal type window rubbers in lengths, which you just stick neatly together. I think they'll rush you huge cash for originals, if you can find them, that is! I might be able to source some twin choke Weber carbs for you, with manifolds, but will have to check with my old man. Otherwise the car still looks OK. Upholstery could be done cheaply, but neatly, if you find the right upholsterer. I had my 1997 BMW 318i seats re done for R800-00 and they used the Audi type synthetic leather, which looks like real leather, not that shiny, cheapo, Spur seat type vinyl! I would love getting my own restoration project again. I did a 1968 Alfa 2,0 GT Junior, in my younger days and spent very little money, but made a fortune, when I sold her! Let me know, I can find out about that synth. leather for you and maybe get a estimate from my upholsterer here, who has a connection to get that Audi synth. leather. Good luck with the project!

Thx Wynandd. I will probably call up all my resources with this one.

The twin Weber side's are a definite. The original Strombergs are shot. That I know already.

I was also thinking of contacting Rubber Products and Mouldings. They make various doorrubbers in different lengths, sizes, shapes etc.

I managed to get a Hayes manual for the car, so that will help a little as well.

Although I probably could manage to put 30k aside, I would ideally prefer not to spend all that money on the car. (Hey, who wouldn't).

Spoke to a good mechanic friend of ours earlier today. They will do the motor, clutch, wheelbearings etc for me. They have a large workshop, and the car can stand there for months if it has to.

If I can get her mobile, then I can start working from my garage when it comes to things like re-chroming, rubbers, tyres etc.

Re registering it would mean that it will be a 2010 model?

Eish, no. It's a '69 after all.
