discussion E46 Bonnet Struts

Hi Guys. Do any of you know where I can get stabilus bonnet struts from locally? Or know of a good oem alternative? BMW quoted around R900 each some time ago and importing a pair of stabilus struts would work out to around the same amount.

Been a while Bavs.. Did you try GoldWagen?

Hey man. It has been a while! I have tried Goldwagen. Seems they only sell Topran struts which aren’t that great from what I’ve read. General consensus seems to be either BMW or Stabilus when it comes to struts.

Let's see some pics of the E46.. Mine has changed a hell of a lot since we last connected.

Try Imcomex/Midas.. I will check in at BMW when I go through out of interest.

Thanks man, I’ll give incomex a call as well!

She’s still the same. Approaching 320k km but looks and feels like half of that. I’ve done a lot of necessary and preventative maintenance in the last year or so. New clutch and DMF, new shocks, refreshed cooling system, new battery and fuel pump, fresh set of coils etc.

I've tried various alternatives to OEM and they didn't last very long at all. Eventually just bought OEM for all the struts on all the old beemers. Just from my experience.

If all else fails, I may just have to bite the bullet and go this route. Incomex has no name brand struts for around R320 each.

Pity you not on CPT

I may have an original set, second hand, which work 100s
Garage is a mess so not sure what of the Smaller E46 bits are left

Spoke to Deago yesterday and they are around R900 each from the agents... Pricier than I expected, but my car is still on OEM bonnet/boot struts almost 20 years later, so worth the outlay long term.

Thanks for checking! Yeah they are pricey. But then again I’d rather buy it once and never have to worry about it again it’s not urgent though so I’ll keep an eye out for alternatives. My boot struts are still perfect, bonnet struts not so much.

Have you tried Monroe? I see my E36 has their bonnet struts, and they seem pretty strong. Not sure when they were fitted though.
