Z4 M coupe - Rear view mirror

Hi All

So after a few frustrating weeks of continuous searching, i finally managed to lay my hands on a mint Z4M :rollsmile: (09 model, 36000kms)

This morning on the way to work, I noticed that my rear view mirror is not tinting (for lack of a better word), I am almost sure that it was working yesterday.

Tried searching the forum, didnt come up with anything, looked @ the int forums and they mentioned something about the mirrors leaking etc... I am quite sure that mines has no indication of this.... as yet...

It should be covered under motoplan?

Anyone else experienced this?

Not sure I understand. My Z4M is (was?) supposed to have an automatic tilting - i.e. as soon as someone with lights comes from behind it tilts. You can't tilt it manually with your hand.

Mine never worked even from new. I complained when I bought it and I was told some BS story that it wasn't supposed to tilt. (Unbelievable but true!)

I complained over a period of 5 years to MP have it fixed, but they never could get it right. The last time I took in before MP expired I jumped up and down about it and they actually replaced it. They forgot to wipe the fingermarks from the mirror and there were 3 blobs of white gunk on the dashboard after they finished.

It still doesn't tilt. Iv'e given up on MP and anything to do with BMW SA service. So I just learned to live with it as I very seldom drive in the dark. If I do I just "tilt" my head when there's someone with lights in the back.

The mirror has some sort of fluid in it, similiar to the GTI's and S3's (from my exp), when its hit by light, it reacts and dim's the mirror, so it doesnt do the dipping as such...

Im 100% sure it did it yesterday and not today, ill be calling bm to let them have a look see, also my gear knob illumination isnt working so ill get that sorted aswell.

Have not had any warranty claims on my cars thus far, will see how this goes.

Yup, tilting is not the right word, dipping or dimming might be better. Mine doesn't do it however.

Iv'e tested it by parking another car at the back in pitch dark and having someone switch on dims and brights on and off. No effect.

If you look at the mirror on the front, so when you look through the front window there will be a white square. In the day if you cover that sensor the glass should dim. The fluid in front of the mirror will go dark. A leak is obvious and you will see the bubbles if it has leaked out. Sounds like it is not common in mild climates. Really cold climes seem to have the issue.
