im looking at getting some viper branches and wrapping them with exhaust wrap i want to seal the wrap with a high heat resin but to do this i need to know what temp the branches go up to anyone have any idea of the temperatures my branches are lightly to see?

the idea is to seal the wrap with resin because it cracks and flakes after a while if i seal it will also not get water in it i want to trap as much heat as i can and ceramic coating will not do the job :(

Get a temperature probe.

If I have to guess I would say that the temperature would probably be in range of 250-300 degrees C, but this is just a guess.

just an update will not be wraping them because the exhaust guy says he has seen branches fail from wrap...

I know that aircraft engines can run EGT in excess of 600 deg C depending on altitude and fuel mixture. The sensor is in the exhaust close to the head.

the problem is the branches distort is they run at to high a temp so they have to be made of thicker pipe

oh ye and the best resin in SA you can get a hold of can only handle 135° and the best resin i have found on the net can only get to 220° so not suitable for exhaust...

when you want wrap your branches, first soak the cloth in cold water, it helps with applying it. Secondly add water hose clamps on the ends to prevent wrap from coming loose at the ends. The resin idea is good but will be a pain to apply/ take off to renew when looking bad. hope it will help.

well i was hoping to get resin that could last but if i use the resin i can get it wont last very wrong... i dont think ill wrap them now because im worried they will distort... i may ceramic coat them but ill have to see how much it will cost...

i may still wrap and seal wish high heat paint and polish the inside of the branches... i will call viper 1st ans ask him if he thinks they might distort...

i wrapped mine and its a crap job
under the bonnet its nice and cool a white cable tie touched the branch and did not melt it just when brown i was lazy in cutting the excess off the strap

the good thing about ceramic coating is they can do the inside so it stops heat from going into the metal ill see how much the quote me to coat my branches then decide

egt can easily reach 700-800C with some hard driving. Youl will need a k-thermocouple and some sort of display to measure that temps. Some multimeters support thermocouples.

I should probably wrap mine so i can take it off later because when i supercharge is i think it will be very bad for my branches to have then hold heat in...

depending on what stainless was used:
any temp over 550 C will start to see creep
and anything over 600 C and it will start to lose tensile strength
at anything over 1 010 C the metal will be annealed and then they branches are distorted

this is why they fail if wrapped... but the branches i have work on a 330i so im thinking because there is less air/heat going threw them i may be able to get away with wrapping them but i do drive my car hard so i dont know if i should take the chance...

I am just wondering is creep and lowered tensile strength really a issue for branches as they are not really subjected to much of a load.

Other than wrapping you could always fit a bigger heat shield to better shield off the rest of the engine bay from the exhaust heat.

im thinking a heat shield may be a better option because the creep of the metal is what is most lightly to make the branches fail... eventually it will cause thin spots in the metal that will wear thew so i guess i heat shield is the best solution

The catalytic converter only works when exhaust reach 400deg C so you can imagine where the heat can go to from there!
