Decided to change from many years of using Castrol to Shell Heilix HX7 for the new car.

The engine was a little dirty when I got her at 201000Km

These pics are after 3000Km on HX7.... they claim "it cleans better than other oils"... and I just have to admit, it really does, check these pics, the metal looks brand new, all the gum and varnish and carbon gunk is gone.

I have no affiliation with Shell at all, I'm just a customer very impressed with this stuff.

Nice, it looks almost brand new, I will definitely have to consider shell helix for my next oil change, I also usually use castrol.

I need to mention it is NOT a longlife oil 10000Km changes only.

For longlife use Heilix Ultra which is BMW Longlife 04 certified.

I don't beleive in extended oil drain intervals anyway, so this works just fine for me.

WOW thats clean.. we usually only change oil every year as we dont do much mileage anyway.. The E46 only did 3500Km between its 2 last services... Rather safe than sorry :) the only thing is the cars on motor plan, its either every 2 years or 25000Km.. No way around it unless doing it yourself..

I normally use castrol oil (High mileage On my old E30 with 380000Km) but used Shell helix ultra 5w 40 on the corsa in Feb.. also happy with that oil..

That is very clean!

Not to hijack the thread, but have any of you ever used Castrol Magnatec?

Reason for asking, I used it for many years on my Corollas. Always found it to be a good oil and the agents seemed to be happy with it too - I always supplied the can of oil and ensured that I got it back with the remaining amount. Anyway, for the last two years before my Corolla was stolen I was noticing a "hot" oil or grease smell after stopping at a robot or stop street. It was coincidentally just after I had the wheels balanced and rotated when I spotted that a lot of grease was "painted" onto the hubs - my first thought was, well the brakes are getting hot enough to almost burn off the excess grease which did make some sense especially since I was noticing this mostly after coming down hills etc. Had them remove the excess but still smelt this for a while. And then I eventually didn't pay much more attention to this until the next time I had the wheels rotated - told the guy to not put any grease on the hubs, fine. Then around about the same time the car went in for service with me supplying the oil once again. Got the car back and the smell was now horribly noticeable.

I then tested this:

1.) I drove down a hill as normal and at the bottom stopped - got the smell.

2.) I drove down the same hill, but instead let the car coast out of gear using just the brakes to stop - no smell...

No oil leaks and the Valve Stem seals were ruled out after a few idle for a few minutes and then rev tests. There was oil consumption but something like a pint every so many thousand KMs - quite reasonable. Not once did I see any smoke - my SO followed me down a hill on one of the tests and I could see her waving her hand to indicate the strong oil smell, and still no smoke.

I think the oil was maybe a bit thin for the engine's age and what was happening was that on compression there was a small quantity of oil that was being sucked through a breather and going into the intake manifold during the combustion (non-combustion due to closed throttle) and exhaust stroke - the oil was not being "burnt" but merely super-heated and vaporised. You could smell it but not see it and even the bumper which was white showed no signs of smoky and oily emissions.

I know that the VW boys had major problems with this oil on their turbo cars, the 1.8T etc. The Magnatec oil was not well suited to the conditions of a turbo charged engine and would very easily develop thick sludge in the engine...

I used to use only Magnatec till I heard BMW stopped using it because of sludge problems. I did notice, every time I opened a can the color and consistency and even smell was different every time. (Probably them experimenting with different base stocks)

My oil of choice is Mobil-1 but the cost is becoming rediculous

I do also remember reading somewhere about the codes that are printed on the can which indicated the quality grade - something to the effect showed that the grade sold at the time was not as good as say ten years ago. Not sure if there was any truth in that, but I hear what you say about it not being the same each time...

i just use shell helix ultra in all my cars since i used to race golfs and im an extremely heavy footed driver, and no shit, i have used royal purple before in the M3 and can not say there is a difference in sound, noises etc..
I change my M3's oil every 3-6k kms coz i give it sticks every time it starts and my engine on 160k kms is still running like brand new, compression still test high and same on every cylinder so i can vouch for Helix as one of the best oils on the market!

CASTROL EDGE i used on my race golf coz ive use to be sponsored by them but i had much more shavings in the sump the year i ran their oil! i dropped the sump every 3 months to change bearings and rings just because when i raced 8v
I took a drive up and down to heat up gearbox oil but raced the engine on oil temps under 40deg Celsius coz my throttles sat right by my branch and i had a 0.2s difference in times on cold and normal running temps..

SHELL HELIX FTW..
