guys those are not torx sockets. he needs a set of 'e sockets'.

looking now at my Torx socket set the Male bits are labeled with T numbers

the sockets are E numbers... from the pics my sockets look like they will fit perfectly over those heads...

im not sure if they are both called Torx or if the E sockets have a different name... mine came as a set together

Both are actually torx, strictly speaking the one is just a torx bit and the other is a torx socket, bit is something that goes into a hole and socket is something that has a whole in it. For clarity's sake the one (the socket) is called e-torx as in external torx.

As a side note to the OP, be very careful when removing anything with a torx head, be sure the bit or socket is seated well before applying any torque as the heads round out/off very easily otherwise. Also be sure on a bolt to check the bit/socket one size up and down as well as it is not easy to judge the size correctly and just because it fits doesn't mean it is the right size, and it this can round out/off the head just as easily.

Just a tip: i got a quote for 10 stretch bolts for my M43 316i motor and the agents want R618.86 for the set. Bought Febi bolts from Masterparts for the princely sum of R113.67. So my advice is : Shop around before buying! Also, the quote for a head gasket from the agents was R1 611.66 and the guys that welded my head got a decoke set which included the head gasket with the valve stem oil seals, various gaskets including the exhaust gasket and smaller gasket that goes between the manifold and the exhaust itself for R1 396.50 (i assume they have added a percentage to that for their effort) The price for the small exhaust gasket mentioned above was R175.97 from the agents.
Btw., found out to my cost that the inlet manifold gasket was not included in the set as the later model E46 316i uses loose rubber "O" rings which were included in my set, and not the normal gasket as on my car. Will have to buy that seperately but it is only about R70 from Autozone

Guys just a quick question. What would be easier, removing the motor as is or can I leave the gearbox and just the the motor out?

You can leave the box in place....probably your best bet.

If the bolts on the box are a ballache to get to, it may be worth while dropping the box mount. But wrestle the bolts, cause there is no need to take your box out, unless you want to check and change seals if needs be.

Good luck.

So I decided to get the sockets needed and took the head of today.

Here is a sneak peak will post some more pics later.

Piston nr 2 & 3 got damaged bad aswell as the bottom of the head. The valves look okay but only 2 is standing slightly out but will know once I have them out.

Although the others look fine, you can test it.

If you pour some petrol or benzine into the port, and it pours out of the closed valve, you have a leak.

To all here where would I be able to get a tool to remove the valves from the head, remove and replace pistons, and balance the crank and camshaft when new pistons go in?

Also where would the best place be to get the pistons and rings and so?

I`m also trying to find out how to get the sump out. Is it possible without removing the entire motor?

So after about an hour struggle with nuts and sockets I got the sump loose and off, but cant get it out. Need to either lift the motor about 50mm or remove the powersteering pump.
Dont have a motor jack.

Anybody want to help?

Why do you need to replace pistons?
Is there a lot of sideways play on them?

If yes block needs to be measured to determine whether a rebore is required or a hone will do.

In replacing pistons you shall need to know how to mount the rings as well as how to insert pistons back in the block.

A hammer will not do.

Bruce you are starting to work in an area where you need a combination of knowledge as well as feel.
Best you do it slowly and ask lots of questions.

ALERT ENGINE PARTS will have pistons gasket sets bearings bolts etc.

I did a google search recently and found that the best way is to lift the motor.

Questions will always be asked, and even though I really miss driving her I'm in no hurry to fix her so I'm taking my time.

Pistons need replacement as nr 2&3 have been slamming against bottom part of head as can be seen in the 2 pictures and because of compresion thats down on nr 3 need to get them out to check the rings and make sure cylinders are clean and clear of damage and debris.

But after being under the car yesterday for almost an hour I noticed my gearbox is covered in oil buildup that has been there for how long. So now I need someones help I need a engin lift and a knowing hand perhaps to help me get the motor out of the car so I can get the gearbox checked and fixed aswell. Anybody with a lift that I can borrow or rent for a week or 2 please help.

Also where would I be able to find the arm that holds the butterfly in the intake manifold in place as thats the part that broke that caused all this kak in the first place.

Hope someone can help me out with a lift. Would mean a great deal to me.

before you go any further get pricing on a new engine and price the parts you will need to fix this one... maybe you should just swap in the engine Gizmo suggested seeing as the engine has to come out anyway?
