Was wondering for many months about this loss. (Bad loser)

I hope it is still stock...

Eish dude, that looks nasty! Glad you found out the cause of you lack in power. If you are heading toward a turbo replacement, are you going to replace it with a stock turbo?

I miss my 120d a lot. Even though my new car is a lot better, the 120d was a lot more fun to drive and the satisfaction you get when you thump more powerful petrol cars (especially those annoying GTI's) is priceless!

120d FTW!!! Sorry petrolists, I don't care what you guys think/believe/say :blab:

Thanks guys for all the comments. The title is "tongue in cheek"...to get your attention so that this thread is not seen as a DIY. As you can see the thread/post against the e46 330i was written in a very playfull manner - not challenging our fellow 330i owners. :fencelook:

But it will be fun to see the 120d performing against a stock 330i (e46) at the next breakfast run.

Before this turns into another diesel vs petrol discussion, diesel has pros and cons, petrol has pros and cons, deal with it.

So it comes down to preference.

AAAAH no diesel will have the sound of a petrol 6 or 8. If you want the sound of a tractor in the backgroun then Buy a diesel

Maybe not as conclusive, was watching a local motoring show and one of the journo's stated that local sales figures for diesels in the passenger segment were on the decline???

You Must check your facts when I got my 320d recently the sales guy showed me an alert from the factory saying that due to the high demand 320d's have now got a 3 months wait instead of the normal 1 month of other 3 series models

It's all about Fuel Price now days. In Europe with the tight emission laws and the high price of petrol you actually get surprised when you see a Petrol car. We heading the same way. I have always been a fan of the Petrol BMW's and steered away from the Diesels but this new one is something special I must say it pulls way better at least for the first 2 gears than my old e90 323i even 325i I would even say a 330i but it would be at least close with that one. I used to struggle with the Golf 5 GTI with my 323i but this one destroys the Gold 6 GTI quite easily. Now I am not talking about a highway run to 200km/h I am talking robot to robot I am sure once the petrols get the revs grip up and they get into higher gears they could start to dominate.

Now if you not just looking at BMW's the would be declining because entry level cars in this country do not come in Deisel they only petrol more people are buying entry level cars so obviously in general Diesel would be declining. In Europe all entry level cars even with tiny engines have Diesel motors not petrol.

what do you mean when the revs get up? i can keep my car constantly near the redline when i want...

yes the low down power and torque is good under normal driving conditions, but do you really use the lower end of the rev band when racing?

Sorry maybe I was not clear

The thing with a petrol car is when you pull off there is a very fine balence between over reving it and burning out the tyres or slamming into the traction control if you have not swtched it off and doing a good fast pulloff

I gave a Focus ST a carrot in my 323i once because I got well off the line and he stayed with his car trying to figure out weather it should go or not

The Diesel gets by this by having huge amounts of torque low down the balence is easier to achieve than with a petrol Car at least for mine it is. I just pull off from idle I don't even bother to get the revs up. I still have to watch out with loosing grip but the traction control on these FL e90's is a lot more forgiving than my pre fl 323i.

So what I am saying is for robot to robot racing Deisel has an easier time than if you going for a quarter mile say. The Diesel looses its legs quicker than a Petrol at high speed acceleration.

Just to add my 2c with regard to the x20d's performance, I had the 130kw 120d and it is a very underestimated car. I live in the GTI 5 capital of South Africa (aka Overport, Durban) and its very easy to pick a fight with the Golfists at the traffic lights. I would assume the many I had a run with were stock, my 120d used to be a car ahead and still opening at the top of 3rd gear.

Call it BS, I wouldn't blame anyone for not believing me - to be honest I didn't know the car had such potential. I cant blame it on the drivers because the results were the same for different the different cars. If I still had the car, I would be ever so happy to prove it to anyone who is skeptical, but sadly I sold it :(

I did run one G6 GTI where the two cars were dead even and to be fair, there were a few cases where I had my a$$ handed to me by modded GTI's, but for what the N47 is, its remarkable. If you own one, or even spend time driving a car with a N47 under the hood, you will know why there would be a demand for them.

With low emissions, excellent fuel economy and impressive performance, I didn't mind spending that little extra over the 120i. Oh and BTW, I love the GTI, this was not a bashing exercise, just that its the benchmark in the hot hatch department and coincidently I live in an area littered with them. Spend five minutes watching the traffic on the famous Sparks Rd and you will see what I am talking about!
