What would you pick as a daily?

So I'm in the market for a new car soon. I've got a few cars in mind, and I cant make up my mind.

My list currently consists of:

1) Mazda CX-5 (New shape)
2) New Polo GTI 2018
3) Golf 7 GTI (not 7.5... cant afford that)

The Mazda I like, because It would be nice to have an SUV in the family. SA roads are kak, so something higher would be nice, and I love the interior.

With the VW's... well.. I've been watching reviews, etc of the latest Polo GTI, and I must say, it seems pretty great, almost makes the Golf 7 seem unnecessary for me.

suggestions? Any other cars I should check out? My budget is about R400k MAX.

Mazda has really been stepping up in all departments, interior, exterior and engines.

Liking the new CX-5,diesel obviously. But then again, the new Qashqai is also a good option for 400k,if you looking to go the SUV route.

You mentioned "family", so I'd go the SUV way bud.Plus, the hectic fuel prices now are just gonna get worse...Watch December,R20/l easily...

Let the other okes on the forum weigh in,then let us know what you decide on.

I say "Family" but I suppose its quite pre-emptive. No kids yet, haha. Actually the main reason ?Im leaning towards an SUV is for cabin size.Would be nice to be able to fit DIY supplies, possibly my dogs, etc.

That being said, the golf will actually fit a lot of stuff, if I can fold the seats down (unlike in my BMW..........)

I'd lean more towards the compact SUV's purely for practicality. It would be great for long trips and if you need to go on dirt roads. There's a bit less to worry about with pot-holes or poor tar surfaces.
The new VW Tiguans are great cars but having a quick look on AutoTrader they're around R450k+
The new Polo's are neat and quite 'techy' but it all depends on what you're going to use the car for. The polo will be practical if you're mainly town driving and need something compact for parking.

Look at the creature comforts, driver assists and how good the dealerships are with services etc.

I really like the new VW Tiguan if I were to look at an SUV, it has presence unlike the X1/3 dare I say it.. .. But it is pricey..

Read this: https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-cx-5-and-vw-tiguan-suv-comparison-which-is-better-2018-10?IR=T

Been looking at the Tiguan as well. Of the new version, I could probably only afford the entry level (unless I look at second hand) which seems very bare-boned.

The CX-5 just seems nicer. I agree with the article you linked. VW is great when it comes to resale time though... Not sure how well Mazda's hold their value.

I do like the techy side of cars. I really want android Auto in my next car. It seems Mazda doesn't have that yet, but apparently will be getting it. Via software update, hopefully.

I have uses for both, that's the thing. My daily drive is through town, with not-so-good roads, but I also like to nip through traffic easily. Parking at work isn't great, so smaller is better in that regard. And whilst I do want a bigger car for more space, I'd wager 95% of my car rides involve me and my laptop, with the occasional person or two in the car. Once in a while I curse at not having a big enough car for a particular reason, but I suppose those are seldom.

I wonder how a polo GTI would fare on our roads compared to my BMW... It may not be worth the change, that's the thing. However, the new car would be in motorplan, which will be nice.

G7 if you are okay with the high risk thingy associated with it.

That Mazda is a nice car, had an opportunity to drive one and its smooth. Comes already loaded with things that other companies would charge you an arm and leg for as optional extras. It is rather vast and for one man and his laptop seems a bit like over kill

The new polo GTi is fantastic in every way possible but it just can't justify spending that much amount on a Polo. At the end of the day its a Polo and for that amount you can get a descent speeced G7 GTi :dunnoanymore:

An economical SUV

I went the hot hatch route after the E60, although it is a great amount of fun, our roads are just too crap.

Whatever you choose, make sure it has enough power to do what you need it to do.

Here's my 2c

and dare I say it, the 7GTI is one of the best daily's IMO. I have had my fair share of vehicles most of which I have sold within a year but for some reason my 7 GTI has remained with me as a daily since 2015. It has everything, its really well put together and post 2014 models have very little issues. The folding turn her into a small bakkie and the dsg box is fantastic and its a fantastically fun car to drive and quite comfortable. The drivers sear is a really nice place to be, the steering wheel is awesome and you really get this cockpit like feeling.

My buddy who has a CX5 2.0 (New Shape) wouldn't recommend it unless you purchase the diesel variant. The body is just too big and too heavy for a small NA petrol engine. The Interior is fantastic and it looks amazing but just way too underpowered.

If I could i would like a G7, Polo being a tad smaller, although the new Polo is bigger than the 6c shape.

SUV ill like to have a Tiguan or the Q3 but haven't looked at the CX5 yet

Yeah, the Mazda comes with literally everything I would need/want interior/tech wise (the Dynamic version anyway).

Yeah I hear you about the polo. I just love the tech in the new one.
My only issue with a VW hatch is....... I already have a BMW :roflol: It almost feels like a "downgrade" Even though I know it isnt. Thats brand snobbery for you.

This is my concern with the Mazda. Especially because I'm not going for one of the upper-trim levels with the larger engines. I do like to zip though traffic and down the highway if I'm in a rush for something.

330d ftw. Def one of the best DD's if you say like zipping through.

Get a '14/'15 and extend plan if you have the budget

I would definitely go for this too :cartel: Very few cars(if any) match this in terms of consumption vs performance and you should be able to get an extremely good example within your 400k budget

We just got a CX-5 for my wife about 2 months ago, the 2.0L NA model. Took it to Magaliesburg over the weekend. It does need to rev a bit but it has enough power for a daily. I would definitely consider it! Skyactiv engines are rocksolid.

I'm sort of leaning away from another 3 series to be honest. I do love it, but a change would be nice. I'd love an M-Sport X3, but alas, I cant find a good example of one for my price range. And I'm not keen on trying to move finances around/take a balloon for the new one..

Which trim package did you guys get? The active, dynamic or individual?
The active auto would be my starting point, but I like the extras the dynamic brings..

I concede, this is a very nice example indeed. My ONLY problem with it is that its almost out of plan. Thats one of the reasons I'm looking for something newer. I know I can extend the motor plan, but thats very pricey, which puts me out of budget.
How reliable are these cars?
