This weekend I went down to the Eastern Freestate to a holiday farm down there that I visit every year.

This trip I decided to take a drive up to the Katse dam as we were 1km from the lesotho border at Caledonspoort.

We headed off early in the morning with 4 people in my 320d and two people in my brothers E90 320i.

About 3 hours into the trip on a huge pass up to the dam my car started to feel like she was taking strain. I was boosting hard to keep speed up the pass. I said to the passengers, this does not feel good. I think we have a problem.

Two minutes later my temp gauge started climbing. As saw it I said "Oh F*ck.........there she goes" and immediately after that a huge plume of white smoke blew out the tail pipe followed by steam from under the bonnet. Luckily I was about 20 meters from a siding and gave her one last push to get off the road. When I switched the motor off the temp was about 3/4 of the way and not yet at boiling.

When I opened the bonnet I saw the expansion tank had blown wide open. It is split about 25cm down.

All I had with me was a 1 ton tow strap and after not having any joy finding a recovery service and heavy weather heading our way, decided to tow her out with the 320i.

We almost set my brakes on fire down the pass and snapped the tow line 4 times getting out. Nearly got arrested for towing with a rope and had to shell out R500 to get away, got caught up in a protest march and burned the 320i clutch to pieces but we got over the border 4 hours later.

My dad headed down with his E39 to tow me home to JHB with a solid tow bar but his F*cking fan belt snapped in Frankfort on the way.

We had to get his car taken to the holiday farm at a cost of R2600 and I headed to bethlehem in another vehicle to get a belt from the agents there. We spent Saturday evening fitting a new belt to the fiver and towed my girl the 360km home yesterday.

I know the expansion tank on the e46 is problematic but is there a chance my head gasket actually went based on the fact that it blew so badly and the white smoke from the pipe. There is no water in the oil but I did switch the motor off as soon as it happened so it may not have worked through yet. The car still starts and the turbo is still spinning but I did not want to run it for more than 5 seconds.

Quite a nightmare experience. I had a similar experience like 300 km way from JHB to Cape Town many years ago with a Jetta CLi 2.0. Sorry man hope yor car gets fixed soon and not major major damage/cost.

New expansion tank fitted and all seems ok for now. Need to just keep an eye on the water level for the next few days to make sure everything is fine.

Firstly, sorry to hear about the cars and the ruined weekend.

Secondly, report those cops because inadvertently you just bribed your way out of being arrested. They accepted the bribe, and I'm pretty sure that's what they were looking for.

If I was in South Africa I would have told the cops to get F#cked because I know my rights but I was in Lesotho when it happened. I would never bribe a cop in S.A. and would actually risk being arrested by them if they tried to solicit a bribe from me. I could use the settlement money from a wrongful arrest case right now.

I knew they were after a bribe and arguing would not have done me any favors. They would have detained me for who knows how long and eventually let me go because they were in the wrong but that would have left my wife and grandfather stranded in that shit hole of a country while I proved a point which could have been far worse.

They wanted to charge me with reckless endangerment which I found quite Hilarious when you see how they drive over there. The speed limit is 50km/h and you get overtaken at 100km/h+ on a blind rise over potholes with 6 people on the back of a bakkie. Not a single POS that overtook me was close to being roadworthy. I also had a folding knife in my pocket that I use for protection. This cop spotted it and said he could arrest me for that too so if I chose to argue he would have found a laundry list of charges to throw at me.

In Lesotho the cop that arrests you is also the cop that takes the role of investigator of the case so you dont stand a chance either way, you will spend a long time in jail if you give them shit.

As for reporting it...............to who? Everyone of them is corrupt as the next bastard and they did not have any id. More importantly I dont even know where the f*ck I was. There are maybe two road signs in Lesotho if you are lucky.

Im not even upset about it, that is the African way. I will never go back and spend my money in that country again because of my experience and the fact that it is a total shit hole but they dont think that far so why must I try and change it.
