Well, my 330d swallowed one swirl flap.

i expected worse.. might get away with replacing 2 pistons and checking/replacing valve if bent, although it looks like the seat is damaged? as long as no damage to cylinder wall i guess..

Well, only one flap was damaged and two pistons have marks on them. So the stuff does travel between the cylinders. Hope the turbo is still OK.

if only one came lose then i think it went into the intake because its up from the head...

i think it bounced into the intake then dropped into another cylinder...

I also wonder where is the swirl flap itself. Most likely somewhere in the head on it's way to the intake valve opening. Suppose that is to big to enter via the valve opening!

Hi all

Would like a few to comment on this please:

I am waiting for the cost on two options:

1) Replacing pistons, might be sleeves as well on the two damaged cylinders and the normal rest to complete the engine.

2) Redo the complete engine to the condition as close to new as you can do it. I am sure this will be a few bucks, will keep car for some years after spending this tipe of money. ( This is without swirl-flaps)

Regards.

Option 1 sounds good. I don't think it is worth rebuilding an otherwise fine motor. These engines are very strong, and last very well, you will be wasting money. (I have heard of one unopened with 1,000,000+km on...)

Thanks P1000, one of my friends is telling me the same thing. This engine is on 180 000km. I am waiting to hear from Clutchy i.c.w. the condition of the head after it was tested. I would hate to buy another second hand engine and not to be sure about the condition.

i would also just fix it... the only reason i would go further is if you could get a performance gain out of it while the engine is open, but with a diesel i dont think there is anything you could alter that would make you gain anything...

@ Moranor, The engine's output is on 192kw and 510nm at the moment. I am very happy with the power/economy of this car. It is sort of best of both worlds. Some might want more power but this is a very nice drive. Even when you want to play on a twisty road it does not disappoint!

It might well be worth replacing the turbo with a new one now, since most of the labor will already be done. (don't get a rebuilt unit, only new oem garrett.)

@ P1000, will chat to Cluthcy and hear if he have some good contacts on a new turbo. I am a bit worried about the turbo as the small screws that damaged the engine was not inside the engine anymore. So most likely the turbo blades will be chipped as well. I will ask my wife to modify all my pants pockets.

Ok, some good news. The head is in perfect shape. They will only replace the valve guides. Replacing two pistons and maybe two sleeves with a set of rings while they are there. Clutchy will check out condition of waterpump as well.

Hi all.

Just received a call from Clutchy. They will go 1st oversize on all 6 cyl.
Engine wear is on the limit, prefer rebuilt.
Redo all bearings. Will be as close as you can get to a new engine.
Replacing the flywheel as well as it's a bit very 2nd hand. To much play.
Replacing the prop coupling .
Still waiting to hear about the turbo as we think we will replace or re-con the unit.
He is also installing my rear diff bush. The bush is lying in the trunk for a few months as I was a bit chicken on doing it myself!
So all in all, spending a bit more than normal but I think it is worth it.
Thanks Clutchy:thumbs:
While the car is out of action, Clutchy is arranging for my front bumper to be resprayed as the car picked up a lot of chips on my recent NW trip.:ty:
